Richard T. Hayes, 94, a lifelong resident of Concord died peacefully at home on May 21, 2022.
He was born on June 16, 1927 to Joseph M. and Louise (Moreau) Hayes. He was raised in Concord. After marrying his wife, Mary K. Davis and having three daughters, they bought the family home on Bruce Road in 1962, where the family resided and where he was able to live out his life.
Richard "Dick" graduated from Concord High School in 1945. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps at age 17 and spent his early days of active duty at Keesler Field in Mississippi. Upon returning to Concord in 1946, he went to watchmaking school in Boston, and passionately enjoyed watch and clock repair for family and friends. In 1951, he was recalled to active duty and was stationed at Carswell Air Force Base in Texas. He joined the Federal Reserves in 1944 and was an active reservist until 1983. He began his career in civil service in 1952 at Hanscom Air Force Base as an aircraft instrument specialist. When the flight lines at Hanscom shut down in 1973, he went to work at Fort Devens until his retirement in 1983. He was also employed by Concord Public Schools as a fleet mechanic and bus driver for 30 years.
Nothing gave him more pleasure than being involved with the lives of his three girls, Mary Lou, Carole and Donna. Being the mechanic that he was, he always made sure the girl's bikes had air in the tires, oil on the chains and straight handle bars; oftentimes doing these inspections while they waited impatiently. The girl's cars got the same care; always fresh oil and tires rotated. He was so happy to watch his girls get married and make their homes and start their families. He loved his new sons-in-law Wayne, Rob and Fran like they were his own sons. In his spare time, he could always be found at one on the girls' homes, lending a hand and thoroughly enjoying watching them build homesteads.
His grandchildren, Ryan, Jeanna, Chris, Libby and Breanna were very dear to "Papa Dick". He delighted in attending soccer games, basketball games, track meets, horse riding events, school plays and graduations. He was so proud of his grandchildren and truly enjoyed being involved in their lives. More recently, his great grandchildren Walden and Althea were a tremendous source of joy for him.
Richard is survived by his three daughters, Mary Lou Hayes-Dagostino of Littleton, MA, Carole Raikunen and her husband Wayne of North Port, FL and Donna Hayes Murphy, with whom he lived and was lovingly cared for at the family home in Concord. He also leaves his grandchildren Jeanna Raikunen, Christopher Dagostino and his wife Jess, Breanna Murphy and her husband John Reedy, and Libby Dagostino. He is great grandfather to Walden Reedy and Althea Reedy. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Mary and grandson Ryan Murphy.
