Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard "Dick" Ballou Jr. who died peacefully on June 9, 2025, in Valrico, FL at the age of 87.

He was born in Concord, MA on July 30, 1937, to his late parents Richard Ballou Sr. and Flora (Brady) Ballou. Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years Donna Nancy (Cutter) "Nonnie" Ballou. He was a 55-year resident of Acton, MA and lived a life rich with family, service, sports, and friendship.

Known to many as Dad, Grandpa, Dick or "Coach". He is survived by his three devoted children, Richard III (Cindy) of Jacksonville, FL, Kristin Ballou Cianci (Derek) of Groton, MA and Jeffrey (Amy) of Valrico, FL, his adoring grandchildren, Alexander, Dylan and Isabella Cianci, Madison, Morgan, Ainsley and Teagan Ballou and Harrison Hawk, his sisters-in-law, Carollynn Cutter of Nashua, NH and Cynthia (Cutter) Georgina of Keene, NH along with numerous nieces and nephews.

A lifelong lover of sports, Dick had an especially deep passion for Boston teams – nothing more so than his beloved Red Sox. He rarely missed a game and seldom missed a chance to talk about them. Another special tradition he cherished was attending a Florida State football game each year with his sons, blending his love of sports with the love of family.

Richard's athletic talent and determination were evident early on. Drafted by the Washington Senators and then into the US Army, he continued to play ball throughout his military service. After his honorable discharge, he dedicated his life to mentoring young athletes as a coach at Acton-Boxborough High School, and later at Fitchburg State University. He positively impacted generations of students, not just on the field, but in life.

He had a gift for making people feel seen and valued. He loved people and people loved him in return. His warmth, quick wit and unwavering kindness made every room brighter. He truly never met a stranger.

A celebration of Coach's life will be held on Friday, June 13th at The Landing in Valrico, FL.
