Obituary

Richard "Dick" Arnaud, age 79, died peacefully on June 28, 2022 in his Concord home, surrounded by family. Despite losing his 10 year fight to live with dementia, he never lost his sense of humor, his love for and recognition of his family, and his ability to find the fullest glass of wine in the room. A New York native, Dick graduated from Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar and the University of Rochester where he received a B.A. in Philosophy after switching from Theoretical Physics as a desperate attempt to graduate on time. At Brown University, he picked up a PhD in Philosophy (with a focus on Metaphysics and Logic) and met the love of his life, Joanne, while working at the university bookstore. Joanne and Dick left the East Coast for a short stint in the Midwest where they taught at the University of Minnesota and where their two beloved children were born. True to character, Dick chose a career path which involved constant intellectual challenge. After returning to Massachusetts to teach at Wheaton College, Dick left academia for the realm of software engineering where he worked on new and emerging technologies at places like Digital Equipment Corporation, Polaroid, State Street and Fidelity. An unexpected offer from the Suez Canal Authority to work on the LORAN tracking system in Ismailia, Egypt gave Dick the opportunity to share his enthusiasm for travel and for learning about other cultures and languages with his family. After his retirement, he used his technical skills to support non-profits and focused his free time on local and national political campaigns. He was an avid cyclist, and was particularly fond of routes through interesting urban areas and trips where there were stops for premium ice cream. Dick is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joanne Appleton Arnaud of Concord, MA; daughter Cassie Arnaud and partner Jonathan Case of Somerville, MA; son Rick Arnaud and partner John Burke of Hudson, MA; brother-in law David Appleton and his wife Jennifer Grise of Intervale, NH; nephews Evan Fritz of Intervale, NH and Daniel Fritz and his partner Emma Cushing of Somerville, MA; and last but never least, Tucker his dedicated service dog. Kind to his final waking moment, Dick will be missed deeply by all who knew him. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Dick's life during visiting hours at Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord, MA on Friday, July 8th from 4 to 7 pm. A private burial service was held at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. In keeping with Dick's loving spirit, his generous wish of organ donation was fulfilled to support research for those who continue to live with dementia. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests contributions in his memory be made to the Dementia Caregiver Support Program at Massachusetts General Hospital or to the Somerville Community Corporation . Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
