Obituary

Concord, MA - The Rev. Rebecca Morton Blodgett died on Saturday, August 12, age 84. She was born April 16, 1933, in St. Paul, MN and graduated from Summit School in St. Paul, and then Vassar College in 1955. While her children were young, she was a dedicated volunteer with many organizations, including Planned Parenthood, the American Red Cross, the First Parish in Concord, Concord Family Services, Widening Horizons and the Timothy Wheeler House in Concord. She was also a world traveler, loved listening to classical music and playing it on the piano, opera, birding, and enjoying her children and grandchildren. Rebecca grew up in the same house as her great-grandfather, a doctor who made house calls and often forgave bills incurred by patients who had difficulty paying. He inspired her. Rebecca also learned much about social welfare from her parents and great aunt, who were dedicated volunteers. So in midlife she followed a lifelong desire to serve others by entering the ministry. After graduating from Harvard Divinity School in 1989 as a Unitarian Universalist minister, she devoted herself to pastoral care work in Boston-area hospitals and nursing homes. She also served as an assistant minister at her Concord church. Rebecca is survived by her husband of 61 years, Timothy B. Blodgett of Concord; four children, Sarah D. Blodgett of Concord, Amy S. Walker and husband Jonathan of Chevy Chase, MD, F. Jeffrey Blodgett and wife Emily of St. Paul, and Katherine D. Duffy of Westford, MA; as well as eight grandchildren, Joshua Buxbaum (and wife Ruth), Eleanor Buxbaum, Gretchen and Christopher Walker, Timothy and Jack Blodgett, and James and Anna Duffy. Two brothers, Frederick Driscoll of Williamstown, MA, and Andrew Driscoll of Salem, OR, also survive her. Her memorial service will be held on Friday, September 29th at 11 AM in the First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road, Concord. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Concord Free Public Library, 129 Main St, Concord, MA 01742, in support of children's services.
