Raymond "Ray" Bush Hanselman passed away in Lincoln, MA on January 5, 2018, at the age of 85.
Ray is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judith Helen (Bailey) Hanselman; his children, Eric and his wife Sarah, John and his wife Rachel, and Ted and his wife Carolann and seven grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his twin brother John William Hanselman and his wife Marjorie Hamm.
Ray was born in New York, NY in 1932 to John Joseph and Margaret Hanselman and raised in White Plains, NY where he attended White Plains High School. He graduated from Amherst College and received a PhD in Chemistry from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After a prolonged chase, he married Judy in San Francisco, CA in 1958. After moving to Plainfield, NJ, Ray began working on the Mercury Space Program for AVCO. Continuing what would be a lifetime of innovation and invention, Ray moved to Concord, MA to work for Polaroid and then Waters/Milipore, Active Impulse Systems and LingoMotors. Ray always rose to a position of leadership in research and development. Over six years, the couple welcomed three sons. Ray was a dedicated father who was intent on teaching his children manners and a respect for learning. His sons remember him as an energetic and devoted father who encouraged them to pursue their goals with all their heart. Ray believed that any challenge could be solved by a combination of intellect, hard work, duct tape and epoxy glue.
Ray was an accomplished outdoorsman and nature lover, having traveled widely in the US and the Caribbean to fish, snorkel and bird watch. He spent some of his most favorite moments on the family farm in Vermont. He was a generous man who loved his home of Concord, MA where he served on the Library Committee, Board of Assessors and as an Election Officer.
A celebration of Ray's life is scheduled for Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 1:00 at The Commons in Lincoln, 1 Harvest Circle, Lincoln, MA 01773.
