LINCOLN - A true gentleman died on Saturday June 12th. Robin Thompson had a quiet lunch with his wife, Bina, and friends, admired the beauty of the spring garden through the window beyond the table, went upstairs to take a nap, and never awoke. He died at the age of 87 with the same quiet elegance that distinguished his life.
Randall Thompson, Jr. was born February 23, 1934, in New York City. He was the son of the composer Randall Thompson and Margaret Quayle Whitney. He attended Belmont Hill School and furthered his education with three years of service in the 82nd Airborne Division. He then studied architecture at the Boston Architectural Center before opening his practice in Cambridge, MA, where he lived until the family moved to Lincoln in 1991.
Robin was an all-around athlete, an avid skier and boater, a lover of beauty and design, be it in pruning a tree, crafting filigree, or choosing the correct bowtie for riding a tractor. He was a skilled woodworker who delighted in making graceful wooden spoons and other implements, as well as properly scaled furniture for his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Bina Hayes, three sons and daughters-in-law: Robin Thompson and his wife Betty Christen, Sam Thompson and Anne Bunn, Colin Thompson and Victoria Manley, and six grandchildren.
In an increasingly harsh world he had an innate confidence and trust in others and a kindness that touched all he knew. He will be missed.
A memorial service is planned for a later date.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to WCRB Classical Radio: WCRB, PO Box 414670, Boston, MA 02241.
