Obituary

Polly Currier Berry died peacefully at Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, MA on Thursday, February 6, 2020 with her daughter Carolyn at her side. Polly was 91, ("damned near 100!") and her health had been in decline for some time due to COPD, a condition that had taken her father, Earle Dan Currier. Since 2015 Polly had been a resident at Concord Park, an assisted living community in Concord, MA, but she was a passionate native of New Hampshire and will now rest in peace in her family's plot in the Summer Street Cemetery in Lancaster, NH, alongside her husband Lincoln, siblings, parents and grandparents. Polly Noble Currier was born on August 5, 1928 in Lancaster NH, in the house built by her maternal grandfather, Dr. Emmons Stockwell. She was the third daughter and fourth child of Earle Dan Currier and Lucy Katherine Stockwell. She was the last member of her familial generation, having been predeceased by her mother in 1953, her father in 1966, her brother David Page Currier in 1971, Lucy Tripp Currier Holden in 2008, and Sally Greenleaf Currier King in 2008 and many cousins. At the time of her death, Polly was the oldest descendant of the settlers of Lancaster NH, Ruth Page and Emmons Stockwell. In 1946 Polly graduated at the top of her high school class from Lancaster Academy, and attended the class reunion almost every year since. In June of 2019 she and her classmate Rachel Hastings were honored as the oldest alumni in attendance at the reunion; the friends were honored with flowers. In 1948 Polly graduated from Katherine Gibbs School in Boston and worked as an executive secretary in many industries. For several years in the 1970's she was the private secretary to Sinclair Weeks, the former Senator from Massachusetts and the Secretary of Commerce during President Eisenhower's administration. In 1955 Polly married Lincoln Berry and became a mother to his son Stephen Berry. The couple lived in Lancaster where their daughter Carolyn Page Berry was born in 1960. Polly continued to work part-time, but also was busy in town and social activities. In 1968 they moved to Conway NH where they built a house. In 1988 they retired to Brookfield NH where they were living at the time of Link's death in 2000. Polly remained there until moving to Massachusetts in 2015 to be closer to her daughter. Polly will be remembered as a smart, funny, kind and multi-talented woman. She played the flute, piano and organ (even playing the organ professionally at a church in the 1950's in Ossipee NH.) She particularly loved playing piano duets with friends. Her love of music included choral singing. She sang for 10 summers at the Berkshire Choral Festival, at special choral concerts at Great Waters Music in Wolfeboro, and with The Clearlakes Chorale in Wolfeboro. She sewed clothes for herself and her daughter, quilted, knit and for more than 30 years was a member of a crewel embroidery group that often met at her home. Polly took painting classes in Berlin NH for years with a group of ladies, including her step-mother. She was a delightful hostess and famous for her Boston Baked Beans and her "boxed" desserts. Saturday nights were often spent with friends and family sharing a pot of beans on her good china. She was known for setting a beautiful table, including a dish of cottage cheese. She was a perfectionist and paid attention to the details, particularly remembering the birthdays of her family and a wide circle of friends. She was known for sending a birthday card and $2 bill to her grandchildren and those children who felt like grandchildren, until they were 18. Polly was also an avid bowler and until age 86 she bowled twice a week in Sanford, ME with her friends from Brookfield. After the death of her husband Polly traveled with a dear friend on a cruise to Alaska, a train trip through the Canadian Rockies and down the Mississippi on the Delta Queen to New Orleans. She joined her family at Camp Huckins in Freedom NH for an annual Family Camp weekend. She enjoyed remembering her days as a camper there in the late 1930's and early 1940's. Her son Stephen, daughter Carolyn and granddaughter Charlotte all followed in her footsteps by becoming Huckins campers. Polly was an avid collector of antiques, especially toothpick holders, cruets and silver—items that she could easily bring into the house without Link noticing. Polly loved card games, particularly 4 or 6-handed cribbage which she and Link would play with her lifetime best friend Mary Jane Falkenham and her husband Elwin. She was a great speller and a master of word games, particularly crossword puzzles. She shared this passion with her son-in-law, Barry Copp, and even helped her daughter complete two hard puzzles two nights before she died. Polly is survived by her daughter Carolyn Berry Copp of Carlisle MA, son-in-law Barry, their daughter Charlotte Page Copp and Barry's children Jonathan Evans and Sydney Copp. She is also survived by her son Stephen Lincoln Berry and daughter-in-law Cynthia Towle of Brookfield NH; grandson Nicholas Berry (his wife Alisha and great grandchildren Olivia and Annabelle) of Danville CA; grandson Joshua Berry (his wife Amanda) of San Jose CA; and granddaughter Joanne DeSouza of Orange CA. She was well loved and will be missed by many friends from many generations. A graveside service at Summer Street Cemetery is being planned for the summer of 2020. In lieu of flowers and in recognition of her devotion to the history of the town of Lancaster NH, gifts in her memory may be made to the Lancaster Historical Society, 226 Main Street, Lancaster, NH 03584. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
