Obituary

Peter P. Orlando, longtime Concord resident, proud World War II Navy veteran, and a man beloved by all who knew him, died following a brief illness on December 17, 2023 at Emerson Hospital. He was 101. Peter was the devoted husband of the late Josephine A. (Sapega) Orlando, who died in 2012.

He was born in Boston on May 9, 1922 as the son of the late Paul and Josephine (Morello) Orlando. Though he was raised in South Boston, Peter often recalled the happiness he experienced during his youth spending time on Cape Cod, calling it the highlight of his pre-Navy life. Whether it was attending Eastward Ho Caddie Camp, or enjoying countless days on Carson Beach, being near the ocean at an early age nurtured what became a lifelong affinity for salt water. He later enjoyed many summers of fishing and quahogging at his Mashpee cottage, with "great swimming in the [salt water] river."

His Naval service spanned over three years and included being aboard the USS ATR-2 as a Radioman just offshore of Omaha Beach during D-Day. He also served as a liaison interpreter for the Navy and French Army. He was invited to return to Normandy in 2019, marking the 75th anniversary of D-Day, where the President of France awarded him the Legion of Honour.

While working at the Watertown Arsenal, he met his wife and soul mate, Josie. After marrying in 1946, the couple settled in Concord, where they raised a family. Peter's professional life included a career in photography for Boston Photo Service, and in printing for CopyCop. He was active for years with the Concord Council on Aging, Concord Knights of Columbus, the Concord and Bedford VFW and as a charter member of the Concord Minutemen. He took great pride in his property, growing a spectacular garden every year. Many were the beneficiaries of the fresh vegetables that he was quick to gift. Peter regularly held court on his favorite perch, the bench in front of his home, where anyone was welcomed for a visit. He greatly loved and was extremely proud of his grandchildren, indulging them with fun gifts and cherished memories.

Peter embodied the characteristics that define members of the Greatest Generation. His steadfast patriotism, work ethic, humility and faithful commitment to family and friends will never be forgotten. His unwavering zest for life, genuine good nature and heart of gold will be sorely missed.

He leaves behind two sons, Peter Orlando Jr. and his wife Liz of Somerset, NJ and Robert Orlando and his wife Nancy of Carlisle, three daughters, Susan Pierce and her husband Doug of Peterborough, NH, Janet Trask and her husband Rick of Mashpee and Patti Orlando Tillotson and her husband Peter of Grafton, along with 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was the grandfather of the late David Pierce, Joseph M. Orlando and Katelyn Gecik, and brother to the late Frank Orlando.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Peter's life and legacy during visiting hours at Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center on Thursday, December 28th from 4 to 7 pm.
