Peggy Read Fry, 74, of Concord died Friday December 13, 2013 in Concord. She was the beloved wife of 46 years of William J. Fry.
Born in Newark, New Jersey on October 29, 1939, she was the daughter of Eleanor "EB" Read of Mystic, CT and the late Mike Read.
Peggy grew up in Northhampton, Massachusetts and Norwich, Connecticut where she graduated from Norwich Free Academy. She was a graduate of Westbrook Junior College in Portland, Maine and after graduation worked as a secretary in Hartford for Travelers Insurance.
Later she moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts and worked for M.I.T. at the National Magnet Lab and then in the Department of Electrical Engineering where she met her husband Bill. They were married in 1967 and moved to Watertown and then to Concord in 1972.
Once her children arrived she became a stay at home mom, her children always being the focus of her life. She was a tireless advocate for her son Christopher who had special needs. After his death in 1982, she began attending meetings of The Compassionate Friends and found it to be a tremendous help in dealing with the loss of a child. She remained active in the group for many years, helping newly bereaved parents, and was treasurer for the local chapter up to the time of her death.
Peggy was a member of Milldames, a service and social group in Concord and greatly enjoyed her many friends and the activities of the group. She headed the committee that provided college scholarships for special needs students and was very involved in the interview and selection process.
In recent years she also committed a large amount of time in the care of her 96 year old mother.
Peggy had a great passion for life. She enjoyed a good conversation and was very approachable and easy to talk to. She loved shopping with her friends, exercise walking, and healthy cooking. Her family and her friends were the most important things in her life.
In addition to her husband Bill and her mother EB, survivors include her daughter Stephanie Guillemette and her husband Robert Guillemette Jr. of Beverly, her granddaughter Rebecca Rose Guillemette, her sister Penelope Read Stevens of Fairfield, Connecticut, her brother John P. Read and his wife Maryann of Groton, Connecticut, and by several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Christopher Read Fry and sister-in-law of the late Wayne P. Stevens.
