Gleysteen
February 24, 1948 – May 6, 2025
Paula M. Gleysteen, of Lincoln, MA, passed away on May 6, 2025 at the age of 77.
She was born Paula Marlene Sweeney on February 24, 1948 to Leo and Beatrice Shoemaker Sweeney. She grew up in Ithaca, New York and graduated from Ithaca High School in 1968. Paula was an only child until she was fifteen when her brother John Matthew Sweeney was born. Paula and John were extremely close siblings until John's untimely death in 2013.
Paula received her Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Education from Syracuse University. During her time studying at Syracuse, she met Nicholas Gleysteen and they fell in love immediately. They married in 1974, with the ceremony held in the U.S. Consul General's palace residence in Leningrad, Russia. Nicholas and Paula subsequently moved to Boston, Massachusetts and Paula taught sixth grade in Hanson School in Massachusetts for ten years.
In 1984 Paula gave birth to her first son, Christopher, while they lived in Back Bay. In 1985 the young family moved to Weston where they lived for almost forty years. Their second son Tyler was born in 1986. Paula devoted herself to decades of family joys and community development. She actively supported Christopher's and Tyler's education, serving on parents' groups at Dexter School and Middlesex School. She regularly worshipped at Trinity Church at Copley Square and was involved in a number of philanthropic causes that included music through Handel & Haydn Society and the preservation of historical landmarks through Fort Ticonderoga and the National Trust for Scotland. Paula was a strong supporter of Boston sports, and particularly enjoyed attending Red Sox games with her family. Paula always cherished friendship, a loving family and led a joyful life.
Paula is survived by her husband of fifty years, Nicholas Gleysteen, her sons Christopher Mörner Gleysteen and Tyler Kingston Gleysteen, her daughters-in-law Erin Cornely Gleysteen and Danielle Birenberg Gleysteen, and her four grandchildren Elisabeth Katheryn Gleysteen, Ethan Benjamin Gleysteen, Matthew Cornely Gleysteen and Sadie Reese Gleysteen and her sister-in-law Stacey Sweeney.
