Paul V. Dee, Sr., 86, of Maynard, formerly of Concord, MA and Nashua, New Hampshire died Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Life Care Center of Acton. He was the beloved husband of the late Helen V. (Mattson).
Born in Concord on September 13, 1922, he was the son of the late William H. and Eva (Wyman) Dee. He attended Concord public schools and graduated from Concord High School in 1941 where he lettered in baseball and football. He later played baseball in the Asparagus League in Concord.
During World War II, he served as a Flight Officer in the Army Air Corps, 235th - AAF Unit stationed at Briggs Field, El Paso, Texas. In 1944, he received his flight wings and co-piloted B 17s and B 29s. He served as a Lt. Colonel in the Massachusetts National Guard, 26th Aviation Battalion in Fitchburg, retiring in 1982. He was a State Pistol Champion in Army competitions.
For many years, Mr. Dee was employed for the Massachusetts Department of Correction as a Correction Officer, Social Worker and retired in 1982 as a Parole Officer.
A longtime Concord resident, he was a member and Past Grand Knight of the Concord Knights of Columbus, Council # 287 and most recently he was a third degree Knight of the Maynard Knights of Columbus, Council # 2121 and a 4th Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus, McSweeney Assembly, # 400.
A fifteen-year resident of Nashua, New Hampshire, he was a Divisional Senior State Champion of the Nashua Horseshoe League and was an avid bowler. He was a longtime communicant of Holy Family Parish at St. Bernards Church in Concord.
Survivors include 2 sons, Paul V. Dee Jr. of Maynard and Mark Dee and his fiance, Rebecca St. Armand of Leominster, 3 daughters, Lorraine Mangan of Lawrence, Carolyn Crocker and her husband Lee of Ashburnham and Cynthia Brooks and her husband Dan of Cardiff, CA. , 10 grandchildren, John Matthew Mangan and his wife Rachel of Holden, Michael Mangan and his wife Desiree of Lawrence, Rebecca Martin and her husband Karl of Gardner, Eric Crocker of Jaffrey, NH, Mark E. Dee of Maynard, Kathleen Raymond of Leominster, Audrey Willis and Parker Brooks of Cardiff, CA, Matthew Brooks and Jenna Arvidson of CO, 9 great grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Lawrence Dee, William H. Dee Jr., Philip B. Dee, Gerald Dee and Maurice L. Dee and Dorothy Martin.
Funeral was held on Saturday, February 7th from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center at 9 AM followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square at 10 AM.
Burial was in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord.
Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home were be held on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. The McSweeney Assembly, 4th Degree Knights, conducted a prayer service on Friday evening at 8:45 PM.

Concord's town flag was flown at half staff on Saturday in recognition of Mr. Dee's service to his country during World War II.
