Obituary

Niklaus Vetsch, 86, of Acton, MA died peacefully Friday, March 31, 2017 at his home. By his side was his beloved wife Ingrid E. (Michalik) Vetsch. They were married 58 years ago in Ingrid's hometown of Berlin, Germany and then embarked on the first, of many, adventures when they immigrated to the United States the following year for Nick's new job. Together they traveled the world while raising a family in Huntington, NY. Nick was the loving father to Ralph Vetsch and his wife Barbara of Duxbury, MA, Werner Vetsch and his wife Terri of Chicago Illinois, and Karen Letteri and her husband Thomas of Carlisle, MA. He was the devoted grandfather of Nikki, Cara, Brian, Erica, Lukas, and Cira. Together the family enjoyed skiing, hiking, golfing, fine meals, and their time at their vacation home in Vermont. He was born in Grabs, St. Gallon, Switzerland on July 31, 1930 to the late Niklaus Vetsch and Marie (Hartmann) Vetsch. His family included his brother Walter, now of St. Gallen, Switzerland and the late Hans Peter of Baden, Switzerland. Nick's adventures began early in life, rock climbing in Switzerland in his late teens. He then served in the Swiss Army assigned to the elite Mountain Division because of his expertise in both skiing and Mountain Climbing. He went on to attain a Bachelor of Arts in Electrical Engineering from the Technical Institute of Winterthur, Switzerland. After graduating, he began work at a large engineering company called Landis & Gyr. After working for several years, Nick took a two-year leave of absence and joined the Swiss contingency representing the United Nations during the end of the Korean War. In this role he served as a warrant officer, stationed in both North and South Korea, ensuring Korea's adherence to the Armistice Agreement. He then returned to work where his strong work ethic and technical skills allowed him to be part of a team that developed an early warning air raid system that transmitted messages over electrical utility lines even during power outages. This system was used by Germany during the start of the Cold War. During this time he met his wife, Ingrid, who also worked at Landis & Gyr. In 1959 he and his wife moved to America, after Nick accepted a job representing Schenck-Germany in the United States. After a merger with Trebel Corporation, Nick became president of the merged Schenck-Trebel Corporation. As president of Schenck-Trebel he presided over the acquisition of three US companies and rose to the position of CEO of the newly formed holding company Schenck Corporation. He retired at the age of 63. To this day people still remember him as a hard workingman of humility, grace and integrity. Nick will be missed by all those that were touched by his humor, adventurous spirit, and his love of life. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 20th at 11 AM in the Acton Congregational Church, 12 Concord Road, Acton directly following an earlier private burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Acton. Officiating will be the Rev. Barbara Aiello. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Hospice Team at Care Dimensions or The Brain Trauma Foundation.
