Obituary

Nicole Fandel passed away March 1, 2022, at age 85. She was born November 26, 1936 in Luxembourg to Michel and Louise Lesgardeur (née Houbiers). Nicole is survived by three of her four children and their spouses, Jean-Paul Fandel and Macarena Camuñas-Baena, Michèle Fandel Bonner and Anthony John Bonner, and Peter and Corinne Fandel; plus seven grandchildren, James, Ian, Chloé, Pilar, Lucy, Théo, and Nico; and five great-grandchildren. Sadly, Nicole's son, Alex, predeceased her in 2003 at the age of 43. Nicole's early childhood memory under the shadow of the Nazi occupation of Brussels was an oft-repeated story of her little act of resistance - exiting a tram with a piece of chocolate given her by a German officer and throwing it to the ground. With liberation, Nicole began her life-long passion for language, discovery and adventure through books, beginning with the Tintin series and continuing on to the full canon of French literature including Sartre after whom she named her first son. After graduating high school, Nicole left for England to learn English. Upon her return to Belgium in 1955, Nicole pursued studies of philosophy at the Université Libre de Bruxelles until she married Walter Fandel, an American visiting the Brussels World Fair, whom she met on a blind date. In early 1959 Nicole and Walter moved to Massachusetts, eventually settling in Carlisle with all four children entering the family by 1963, whereupon the family moved to Switzerland. The family returned to Carlisle in 1969 and Nicole began a career as a French teacher, beginning in adult education while completing her BA at Northeastern University, and culminating with 22 years teaching at Concord Academy. Nicole and Walter separated in 1986 and Nicole retired in 2005. From 2006 until very recently Nicole traveled the world extensively when not enjoying her retirement in the company of her large circle of CA friends and former students whose lives had been enriched by her lifetime love of languages, literature and travel. A memorial service will be held at the Concord Academy Chapel, 166 Main Street, Concord, MA on Sunday, May 15, 2022 at 10 a.m. Please click here to view the video recording of Nicole's service .
