Obituary

Nancy A. McCarthy, 89, of Concord, died Sunday, December 10, 2017 at the Atrium at Drum Hill in Chelmsford. She was the beloved wife for 52 years of the late Jack McCarthy. They were married in 1952. Born in Boston on February 1, 1928, she was the daughter of the late James J. and Rachel (Sayers) McGonagle. She attended Boston schools, graduated in 1945 from Girls High School and in 1948 from Boston City Hospital Nursing School. Following her graduation from nursing school she worked as a nurse at Boston City Hospital prior to joining the Navy Nurse Corps. During the Korean Conflict, from 1950 until 1952, she served as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. From 1978 until her retirement in 1990, Mrs. McCarthy worked as an Industrial Nurse at Nuclear Metals in West Concord. A Concord resident since 1963, Mrs. McCarthy volunteered at town elections, was an avid reader and knitter and was active as a member of the Concord Woman's Club. She volunteered with the American Red Cross and was a Girl Scout Leader and Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. She was a communicant of the former Our Lady Help of Christians Church in West Concord, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. Survivors include her six children; Ken McCarthy and his wife Estelle of Queens, NY, Jeff McCarthy and his wife Cindy of Boston, Chris McCarthy of Bedford, Karen Sirois and her husband Dave of Acton, Mark McCarthy and his wife Jackie of Westford, and Kyle McCarthy and his wife Kirsten of Boxborough, 1 sister, Betty Warnock of Stoughton, 8 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was also the grandmother of the late Daniel McCarthy, sister of the late George McGonagle and sister-in-law of the late Bob Warnock. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, December 15th at the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center from 9 am to 10:45 am followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord at 11 am. Concord's town flag will fly at half-staff on Friday in recognition of Mrs. McCarthy's Navy service during the Korean Conflict. Officers of the United States Navy will present military honors following the funeral Mass. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Daniel McCarthy Memorial Fund, Middlesex Savings Bank, 577 Main Street, West Acton, MA 01720 (Danny's Place).
