Nancy Dean Kingman, 90, of Acton, MA, died of complications from a stroke on January 13, 2022. She was the wife of William L. "Bill" Kingman, with whom she shared 67 years of marriage.
Nancy was born on November 11, 1931 in Sheffield, MA as the daughter of the late Frederic Stuart Dean and Alice Miller Dean Morse. At a young age, the family relocated from the Berkshires to Gloucester, where she graduated from the town's high school. She was a National Merit Scholarship winner and President of the Massachusetts delegation of Girls Town USA. She pursued her undergraduate degree at Wellesley College, graduating in 1953. Between graduation and getting married she worked as a children's librarian in Ashburnham.
After marrying, she and Bill moved to Key West, Florida where he was stationed in the Navy. From there, they went to Norfolk, Virginia until Bill left the Navy. After a short stay in Concord, they moved to Acton where they lived for over 63 years.
A Master Gardener, she was a 50-year member and past President of the Acton Garden Club. Nancy was a member of The Friends of Horticulture at Wellesley College, now known as the Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens. During her years as a volunteer, she was a docent giving tours in the College's greenhouses, where she was able to share her vast knowledge and love of the plants and horticulture in general. Nancy spent over 60 years designing and creating a perennial garden, antique rose garden, rock garden and shrub gardens at her home in Acton. She based the design around an old hedge of lilacs that existed at the house when they first purchased it and still stands today.
Nancy was past member of the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary, and League of Women Voters, and a supporter of the Acton conservation Trust.
Nancy loved her children, she believed in them and supported them in their activities and life choices whether it was helping with homework, cheering on a child at their sport of choice, or to lend a listening ear and advice to the children and then the adults they became, as they worked through their problems of the moment. As an adult, Nancy learned to ride, ski and sail to participate in sports her husband loved.
In addition to her husband, she leaves behind her son, Lawrence E. Kingman of Whitingham, VT, her daughter, Celena E. Kingman and her husband Kent H. Hoult of Lunenburg, MA, two grandchildren, Martha Kingman of Whitingham, VT and Sarah Kingman of Brattleboro, VT, as well as two great grandchildren, Jordan and Christopher Kingman. Nancy was also the sister of the late Celena Bradlee, Frederic "Eric" Dean, Jr. and William Dean.
Family and friends will celebrate Nancy's life during a memorial service on Saturday, April 30th at 1 pm in First Parish, 20 Lexington Road, Concord Center. Her burial service at New Cemetery in Ashburnham is private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Friends of Wellesley College Botanic Gardens, 106 Central Street, Wellesley, MA 02481 or The Acton Garden Club, P.O. Box 2137, Acton, MA 01720.
