Obituary

Mirko Geffken was born in Bremen, Germany, where he spent his childhood and early adult years before an adventure brought him across the Atlantic and ultimately gave him the family that would become the center of his life.

In 1997, Mirko came to the United States to study Finance and Computer Information Systems at Bryant College. It was there that he met Reshma. What began as a college romance became a life together. Mirko and Reshma married just two days before their college graduation and went on to share 26 years together, building a home, a family, and a lifetime of memories. Their greatest joy was their two daughters, Lara and Zara, who very quickly learned that their father could rarely say no to them.

Mirko was a technologist at heart. Curious by nature and endlessly interested in how things worked, he began working for himself early in his career and built a professional life that crossed industries including biotechnology, finance, healthcare, insurance, and technology. He loved solving difficult problems, learning new things, and figuring out how something could be made better. Technology was more than his profession; it was part of how he approached the world—with curiosity, creativity, and an almost irresistible need to explore.

That curiosity extended far beyond his career. Mirko was a true serial hobbyist. Electronics, chemistry, LEGO, puzzles, gardening, computer games—if Mirko became interested in something, he rarely became a little interested in it. He immersed himself completely, often acquiring everything he could possibly need for his newest pursuit. Buying just one of anything was simply not his style. One quickly became three, or sometimes ten. Reshma often joked that she was grateful he had only ever wanted one wife.

The same enthusiasm defined Mirko's generosity. He never simply “stopped by” to visit someone. He arrived bearing things: flowers, food, drinks, and usually much more than anyone expected. Giving brought him genuine joy. If he found something he thought someone would enjoy, he wanted them to have it—and preferably several of them. His generosity was abundant, enthusiastic, and unmistakably Mirko.

His daughters had him completely wrapped around their fingers. Mirko would do almost anything for Lara and Zara, and they knew it. He was the parent to approach when there was a wish to be fulfilled that Mom might reasonably say no to. Sometimes that meant making a last-minute trip to the store because Zara suddenly needed something for baking. Other times it meant helping make the case that, yes, perhaps a piercing really was a perfectly reasonable idea. He loved indulging them, helping them, and making them happy. There was very little he would not have done for his girls.

Those who knew Mirko will also remember his laugh. It was big, unmistakable, and could be heard from another room. He laughed freely, often at his own jokes, and his laughter had a way of pulling everyone else into the moment with him.

One of Mirko's favorite phrases was “Carpe Diem” — seize the day. It suited him. Mirko approached life with appetite and enthusiasm. He wanted to experience things, learn things, enjoy things, share things, and make the people he loved happy while he could.

Mirko's life cannot be measured simply by his professional accomplishments or the many interests that captured his imagination. It is better measured in the flowers carried through someone's front door, the overflowing bags of food and drinks, the late-night trips made for his daughters, the new hobbies that temporarily took over the house, the laughter heard from the next room, and the countless ways he made those around him feel loved and cared for.

He leaves behind a family who will miss his generosity, curiosity, humor, larger-than-life laugh, and the wonderfully excessive way he loved them.

Mirko is survived by his wife of 26 years, Reshma; his daughters, Lara, 16, and Zara, 12; his father, Joachim; his mother, Erna; and his stepmother, Katharina. He was predeceased by his brother, Till.

Relatives and friends will gather for Mirko's funeral service on Sunday, November 1st at 12:00 pm in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center.  A reception will follow.
