IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Milton S.
Davis, Ph.D, M.D.
September 26, 1936 – June 11, 2023
Milton S. Davis, Ph.D, M.D., of Lincoln, MA and Cape Neddick, ME, died at his residence in Lincoln on June 11, 2023. He was 86.
Milt was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1936. He was the fourth child born to Sarah (Raphel) and Max Davis. He was proud to have grown up in Dorchester and graduated with a B.A from Boston University. He then received a Masters and a Ph.D in Sociology at Purdue University in Indiana where he met and married Carol Ann (Rickert) and where they had their first son, Geoffrey.
After finishing his groundbreaking dissertation coining the term, Patient Compliance with Medical Advice, he moved to Boston where he pursued a second Masters Degree in Public Health Administration at the Harvard School of Public Health. After graduation they moved to NYC where he worked doing research at Cornell University Medical College. During that time they had their second son, Gregory.
After five years in Manhattan, they moved to Los Angeles where he was offered a tenured faculty position at the medical college at the University of Southern California. After five years there, he was offered a unique opportunity to become a medical student initiating a new medical school curriculum that he was involved in planning. After receiving his medical degree, he pursued and completed a psychiatry residency and subsequently worked at Cedars Sinai Medical Center for 20 years as the Director of the Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Department while having an Adjunct academic appointment at UCLA. He was recognized as an outstanding teacher and psychiatrist.
After retirement, Carol and Milt moved to Cape Neddick, Maine where they lived for 25 years. During this time, along with another couple, they founded a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, The York Diversity Forum, designed to foster tolerance in the community. He was a volunteer in the mentoring program in the York schools, and was instrumental in building the new York Public Library. In their 80's, they retired to a retirement community, The Commons in Lincoln, Massachusetts, where Milt served as the President of the Resident Council. During those years, Milt took classes and discovered a hidden talent to paint with pastels, particularly painting portraits, especially of his family and friends.
Milt is survived by his wife Carol of Lincoln, MA and Cape Neddick, ME; his son Dr. Geoffrey Davis and his husband, Fabrizio Gentili of Cambridge, MA; his son Gregory Davis and his wife, Rev. Susan Townsley of Kennebunkport, ME, and their two children, Hannah of Cambridge, MA and Andrew of New York, NY.
