Obituary

Mildred Dankel Roberts of Concord died peacefully in her home on September 29, 2015, aged 94 years. She was the wife of the late Gordon Thomas Roberts and mother of Eve Roberts Wanless, Gordon Jr. and John Roberts. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, graduate of Reading (PA) High School and Temple University, Mildred was a long-time resident of Concord. She and her husband moved to Concord in 1949 when they purchased the 1767 Samuel Jones house on Main Street. They lovingly restored the house and treasured its 19th-century historical connections. She was active in the life of the town in numerous volunteer roles. In the Friends Meeting at Cambridge, she contributed vigorously to the spiritual life of Quakers and their social concerns. For almost ten years after her husband's death in 1977, she worked as a Psychiatric Counselor at Emerson Hospital. After retirement she served as a volunteer to the elderly and the community, notably leading the "Octogenarian Group" at the Concord Council on Aging. A true bibliophile, she collected old books and read voraciously. She leaves sisters Hope Kent, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Winifred Carver, of Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and four grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. A Meeting for Worship in celebration of her life will be held at Friends Meeting at Cambridge on Saturday, November 21 at 2 P.M. In lieu of flowers, gifts in remembrance may be sent to Friends Meeting at Cambridge, 5 Longfellow Park, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138. Arrangements are under the care of the Dee Funeral Home of Concord.
