Obituary

Max M. Mason, Jr., 84, longtime Lincoln resident, died Thursday, December 20, 2012. He was the loving partner of Rachel Mason for 36 years. Born in St. Louis, Missouri on December 30, 1927 he was the son of the late Max M. Mason Sr. and Lucy Vaughn (Smith) Mason. He graduated from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri and served in the Army during the Korean War. After graduating from the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1955 he worked at The Architects Collaborative in Cambridge. In 1961 he and John Frey founded their own firm, Mason and Frey Landscape Architects. He retired in 1995. A Lincoln resident since 1954, he was a life-long artist and loved nothing more than painting watercolors of the Maine coast and his backyard in Lincoln. He loved the natural world, nature, plants, the great outdoors and had a kind word for anyone and everyone he came across. In addition to his partner Rachel, he is survived by three children from his previous marriage to Betty M. Fletcher: Max M. Mason III, Cynthia M. Kava and Eliza S. Mason. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Susan Halstead and Alexander Sugar, five grandchildren, and four step grandchildren. He was the brother of Thomas A. Mason and the late Richard Mason.
