Obituary

Maura (McNally) Ambrosino passed away peacefully at Commonwealth Senior Living at the Eastern Shore in Onancock on January 24, 2025 at the age of 66. Maura was the beloved wife of Salvatore Ambrosino to whom she was happily married for 41 years.

Maura was born in Boston, the daughter of the late Louis K. and Margaret (Scully) McNally. Maura will be lovingly remembered by her husband Sal, their daughter, Christine Carrier and her husband Shawn, daughter Alexandra Ambrosino, two cherished grandchildren, Ava and Charlotte, and fourteen nieces and nephews. Maura was also sister to Louis (Vicki Swenor) McNally III, James (Laura) McNally, Jack (Cecelia) McNally, Patricia (Paul Emerson) McNally, the late Marga McNally, and sister-in-law to Joseph (Steve Wandishin) Ambrosino, Roe (Lee) Davis, Julie (Charles) Malewski, and Anthony (Michelle Carre) Ambrosino.

Maura graduated from Trinity College in Washington, D.C., where she stayed on as a college recruiter and eventually became Director of Admissions. When the family moved from the District, she became a college counselor, first at the Madeira School in McLean and then at Georgetown Visitation. Maura was always a gifted athlete, excelling at softball, basketball, and crew. She was a four-year all-star in field hockey while in college making the U.S. National Field Hockey Team in 1980. When her daughters began school, she gladly switched gears, moving from counseling to become the P.E. teacher at St. Joseph School in Herndon, Virginia for the next 20 plus years. Maura loved children and treasured her days running around the gym with the little ones.

Friends and family will remember Maura as always willing to help and to pitch in to get a job done. She will also be remembered as always looking for reasons to celebrate (anything) and would organize a party at a moment's notice. In particular, Maura's Christmas gatherings were legendary. She loved to travel and traveled with her family and friends across the U.S., and abroad, making new friends wherever she went. Maura raised shopping to Olympic heights and locals will recall the malls at Tysons and Dulles flying the flags at half-mast when she moved from Northern Virginia in 2021. We will miss her smile.

The family welcomes friends to gather for a visitation on Thursday, January 30, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Adams-Green Funeral Home, 721 Elden Street, Herndon, VA 20170. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 750 Peachtree Street, Herndon, VA 20170, starting at 11:30 AM.
