Obituary

Maryanne (Baratta) Napier, 87, of Concord, MA died peacefully on September 18, 2023.

Maryanne lived a very full life. She was born in Winchester, MA on December 12, 1935 to Anna (Reilly) and Hugo Baratta. She grew up in Arlington, MA and spent her summers at Swift's Beach in Wareham, MA. She graduated high school from Marycliff Academy where she was captain of her basketball team. Maryanne was also a dancer and acrobat and had dreams of being a Rockette. Her life took a different turn when she battled polio – a battle she ultimately conquered, and went onto finish college at Marymount in Tarrytown, NY.

Maryanne (also fondly known as "Ninnie" – named by her first grandchild) was a Concord resident for over fifty years, where she raised three children and remained until her passing. She was the matriarch of her large Irish/Italian family and a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Family always came first to her. She was a gracious hostess who loved entertaining family and friends. Everyone was always welcome in her home – and she made everyone feel like family with her generosity and candor. Maryanne made the Napier Household on Indian Pipe Lane known for its iconic parties and treasured memories – including the Christmas Eve Open House, New Year's Eve parties, Mother's Hour and never-ending pool parties.

Maryanne worked outside the home for over twenty years in claims management for W.R. Grace, TJ Maxx and Meadowbrook TPA Associates. She loved that her work gave her the ability to travel, and she was a world-wide traveler. Her destinations were often driven by where her children were living at the time: Germany, Hawaii, Kuwait to name a few places. She never missed an opportunity to see her grandchildren no matter how near and far they were.

An avid Boston sports fan, she never missed a game. That said, she was known to shut games off early if things were not looking good – often missing a Brady comeback. She secretly wished to be a sportscaster. She passed her love of sports and Boston Sports teams to her grandchildren – no matter where they lived at the time. Maryanne also took great pride that one of her granddaughters was born during the Snow Bowl.

Maryanne is survived by her children, Norman C. (Michael) Napier IV and his wife Theresa Quadros of Kuwait, Christine (Napier) Stephenson and her husband Lloyd Stephenson of Virginia, Kimberly Napier and her husband Ron Renaud of Carlisle. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Craig Stephenson, Lauren (Stephenson) Esposito and her husband Nick, Nicole Quadros, Colin Stephenson and his wife Maggie, Kasey Fitzpatrick, Jenna Fitzpatrick, Devin Renaud and Emilio Renaud; as well as three great grandchildren: Mia, Murdoch and Beau Esposito.

Maryanne is also survived by her brother, Paul Baratta and wife Mary Ann of Belmont, MA, along with their six children and their families, who saw her as a grandmother figure in their life. She was a mother and grandmother to many but also a friend – leaving behind her longest and best friend of 85 years, Rosemary (Fitzpatrick) Lionetta of Concord, MA.

Maryanne is predeceased by her brother Charlie and her great granddaughter Gentry Esposito.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Maryanne's life on Saturday, December 16th at 11:00 am in St. Bernard's Church at Holy Family Parish, 12 Monument Square, Concord, MA, followed by a reception at The Colonial Inn. Everyone is welcome to come wearing their favorite Boston Sports Team 'jersey'.  A private burial will follow at a later date.
