Mary Jane (Payton) Cratsley, 99, of Concord, died peacefully on Monday, December 23, 2013 at Emerson Hospital in Concord with her family by her side. Mrs. Cratsley was among the original residents in 1995 of Newbury Court, a senior community in Concord run by the New England Deaconess Association. Born on November 15, 1914, in Toledo, Ohio, she graduated from Berea (Ohio) High School and The College of Wooster. She and her late husband, Edward Kneeland Cratsley, lived in the academic communities of Canton, NY and Swarthmore, PA, while he worked at St. Lawrence University and Swarthmore College. An avid birder and long time member of PEO, she also loved her work as a docent at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, a volunteer at the Scott Arboretum on the campus of Swarthmore College, and a book reviewer for social organizations. She is survived by her son, the Honorable John Cratsley (Retired) and his wife, Holly Bernhart Cratsley of Concord. Her other son, the photographer David Bruce Cratsley, died in 1998. She leaves two grandsons, Christopher Kneeland Cratsley of Leominster and Kelso Richard Cratsley of Montreal as well as two great-granddaughters, Maya Jane Cratsley and Lily Abha Cratsley of Leominister.

A gathering to celebrate her life will be held at Newbury Court in Concord on Sunday, January 26th at 2 PM in The Great Room.
