Mary Power Monaghan, age 79, formerly of Chatham and Cohasset, MA, Greenwich, CT and Bloomfield Hills, MI. died Jan. 8, 2018.
She was the beloved mother of Patricia Monaghan Underwood and her husband Steven of Acton, MA, Peter Joseph Monaghan of Pontiac, MI, Kevin Christopher Monaghan and his wife Elizabeth of Waterford, MI, Erin Carney and her husband Tucker of Los Angeles, CA, and the late Brian Aloysius Monaghan and is survived by Brian's wife Christine Monaghan. She was the devoted grandmother of Kaileigh and Sarah Underwood, Peter Jr. and Conor Monaghan, Katie, Jack and Casey Monaghan, and Finnian, Maeve and Rowan Carney and sister of John Aloysius Power and his wife Patricia of Sacramento, CA and the late Patricia Power. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mary was a kind heart, and no matter the circumstances, she always had a way of bringing warmth and fun to every room she entered. She chose her own path, and lit it with her creative spirit, sense of humor, love and compassion for all souls, people and pets alike.
Her sense of family brought a strong dedication to take care of those around her. During her sister Patricia's long battle with Polio, Mary was at her side, supporting her sister and her family. Later in life, with the support of her two daughters, she cared for her mother Eleanor as she battled Alzheimer's. Always with understanding, and always with a sense of humor, Mary brought a sense of togetherness.
Mary's creativity and love of words was a constant part of her life. While living in Connecticut Mary worked for a radio station writing advertisements for sponsors and recording for the station, and while in Cape Cod she worked at a bookstore that afforded her time to talk about books with customers and authors. Mary even wrote a poem entitled "The Little Soldier" based on her son Brian, that was published. Her writings, and the stories she shared during a nighttime tucking-in or by the fireplace had a sense of whimsy and that same spyglass perception of the world that so endeared her to children.
Mary bestowed love and attention to those around her, especially children. She could make any child feel special, and bring a light and smile to their eyes. She was beloved not only to her own children and grandchildren, but to all those fortunate to hear her stories, her songs, and occasionally see her dance a jig. We will miss her greatly, and wish for her in Heaven to have access to a beautiful beach to walk, a cocoa to sip after, a good mystery to read, and the welcoming love of her family who have gone before her.
