Obituary

Mary V. Hyer, age 96, of Boxborough, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at home on March 9, 2022, with her son and daughter by her side. Mary was born June 1, 1925, in Elyria, Ohio, a daughter of the late Frank M. and Ruth (Conry) Verbeck. She was predeceased by her sister Helen (Verbeck) Robertson of Sun City, California, and her brother John Verbeck of San Francisco, California. Mary was a 1947 graduate of University of Michigan and an avid Wolverine fan, despite being married to an avid Ohio State alum and fan. (You can imagine how fun it was in our home on game day each year!) Mary met John Hyer in Denver, Colorado, and they married in December 1962 after a short, whirlwind romance. Mary was 40 years old and John was 9.5 years her junior… something she kept secret until later in life, when she would learn to brag about it! She often talked about how blessed and fortunate she felt to have two healthy children in rapid succession—son John, and then daughter Beth. Her children and family were her pride, joy and focus in her life, although she never let motherhood get in the way of having a good time and developing strong friendships. She was always involved with her local Catholic parish, especially St. Brigid of Kildare in Dublin, Ohio, where she was a Eucharistic Minister and regularly visited the sick and homebound. Mary and her family moved every four years from 1966 until 1986, living in Upper Arlington, Ohio, Maui, Hawaii, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Radnor, Pennsylvania, and Simsbury, Connecticut. Mary and John settled in Dublin, Ohio, from 1986 until 2007, when John's Alzheimer's prompted them to move back to Denver to be closer to son John and lifelong friends, Jay Breen and Marian Ford. Mary cared for John for several years until he lost his battle with Alzheimer's in 2010. In 2012 Mary moved to Boxborough, Massachusetts, to live with her daughter Beth, son-in-law Bill and their three sons. She was able to be see her grandsons grow up and go off to college (and she was even blessed to share a bathroom with them for 10 years!). Many people came to love Mary over the years thanks to her infectious smile, positive outlook, never-wavering faith and sense of gratitude. Despite age-related health challenges, she was an example to all who knew her of faith, unconditional love, kindness, humor and a glass-half-full attitude. Mary is survived by son, John Hyer, Jr., daughter-in-law, Kelly Hyer, and grandchildren John III, Austin and Faith Hyer of Denver, Colorado, and Beth Hyer Roy, son-in-law Bill Roy, and grandsons Michael, Jared and Conor Roy of Boxborough, Massachusetts. Relatives and friends will gather for a Memorial Mass on Saturday, June 11th at 11 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish worshipping at St. Theresa the Little Flower Church, 15 Still River Road (Rte. 110) Harvard, Massachusetts. Mary will be laid to rest next to her husband at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mary's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association , 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
