Mary Regan Critchlow, 70, of Cornelius, North Carolina, formerly of Baldwin Road, Carlisle, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at her home, comforted by her family, after a long and arduous battle with breast cancer.
Mary was born and raised in Boston by her parents, John and Catherine Regan, the middle of five children. She graduated from Girls' Latin School, Boston, then Bridgewater State University, Bridgewater, MA; and later received her Master of Reading from Boston State College. She pursued a teaching career for 32 years starting in Miramar, Florida, returning to teach in the Boston School System for 10 years, then on to Concord, MA at Thoreau School and finally to Potter Road School in Framingham where she assumed the position of reading specialist.
She and her husband, David Critchlow, met in a chance moment in Laconia, NH one summer evening in 1970 and married in July, 1973 in Boston. They set out as one in Quincy, MA, then to Marshfield, eventually moving to Carlisle where they spent 25 wonderful years raising a family before moving to Cornelius, NC in 2008. They were married for 43 years. Mary was a tender and devoted mother, loved walking ocean beaches, constantly fussing in her gardens and studying family ancestry. She also enjoyed, on occasion, feisty games of Euchre and Spoons ("Band-Aids and all").
Mary leaves behind her husband, David, of Cornelius; her daughter Jessica of Asheville, NC; her son Jeffrey and his wife Blaire of Louisville, KY; her sisters Kathy McCann and her husband Bill of Hingham; Jane Donovan and her husband Jack of Scituate; Nancy Callahan and her husband Dennis of Hingham; her brother Jack Regan of Los Altos, CA and her sister-in-law Nancy Dowd of Norfolk, MA. Mary was preceded in death by their baby daughter Amy.
A burial ceremony will take place at 10:30am on Saturday, February 25 at Green Cemetery, Bedford Road, Carlisle, MA, followed by a funeral service at 11:15am at The First Religious Society, 27 School Street, Carlisle, followed by a reception in Union Hall.
We are grateful for your sentiments expressed in beautiful flowers and heartfelt donations to whatever cause you hold dear. But might you simply consider, upon life's journey, when next you come upon a weakened soul that you don't alter course; that you spend a moment to make them feel love, to help them see hope and to know one better day because you were in it. Do that, and you will grace Mary's memory and the love she had for each of you, long within your heart.
Arrangements are under the care of the Dee Funeral Home of Concord.
