Obituary

Mary Alice Boyce, late of Lincoln, Framingham, New York and Washington DC. died January 17, 2016. Born April 9, 1922 the daughter of the late Manley and Alice (Gorvette) Boyce of Lincoln, MA. Sister of Elizabeth Harrington and her husband, Earl, of Harwich Port, MA; their daughters, Ann Rotundo of Colchester Ct., Elizabeth (Betsy) Rubel of Chicago, Illinois and Mary Alice Harrington of Harwich Port Ma. Alice is also survived by her nephew, Manley Boyce and wife Karen, of Lincoln, and their daughters, Lisa Reardon of Westwood, Lauren Gray of Easton and Lesley Stewart of Wayland, Ma. Alice was predeceased by her brothers James Boyce of Lincoln and Manley E. Boyce of Harwich, Ma. Ms. Boyce started her career at the DeNormandie and Verrill Dairy on Thoreau Street in Concord while she was a student in Concord High School. Upon graduating from Concord High School, Ms. Boyce enrolled in Simmons College, graduating in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science in Business. After graduating from Simmons and until 1948, Alice was the secretary to Vice President, Donald L. Brown, in the Patent Department at Polaroid Corporation. In 1948, she moved to New York City to work for Kevin McCann, Assistant to Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was President of Columbia University. It was at her employment at Columbia University that Dwight Eisenhower recognized Ms. Boyce's loyalty, intellect and superior work ethic that forged a life-long relationship with the two until Dwight Eisenhower's death in 1969. In 1951, Ms. Boyce was the only candidate from Columbia University to be invited to move to Paris, France, as secretary to Dwight Eisenhower at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) where she worked closely with top military officials of the twelve NATO nations. In 1953, Ms. Boyce returned to the United States to work with the now President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, holding several positions; secretary to Colonel Carroll, Special Assistant to President Eisenhower; secretary to General Andrew J. Goodpaster, Special Assistant on National Affairs, and as secretary to McGeorge Bundy, National Security Advisor to President John F. Kennedy and President Lyndon Johnson. Ms. Boyce traveled with President Dwight Eisenhower, President John Kennedy and President Lyndon Johnson on Air Force One on trips all over the world. One notable excursion, in December, 1959, Ms. Boyce accompanied President Dwight Eisenhower in an eleven-nation goodwill tour of 22,000 miles and 19 days of meetings with heads of state, elaborate formal receptions and tours of points of interest in Italy, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Iran, Greece, Tunisia, France, Spain and Morocco. In 1966, when Mr. Bundy became President of the Ford Foundation, Alice left Washington, DC for the last time to become the Special Assistant to the President of Ford Foundation. She enjoyed this position for many years until Mr. Bundy took the position as Professor of History at New York University in 1979 and she accompanied him there to become his assistant. In 1993, Alice moved back to her hometown of Lincoln, Ma and lived at the Ryan Estate, next to St. Joseph Catholic Church where she had been baptized, raised and life-long communicant. Although Ms. Boyce led a fascinating life surrounded by high-profile dignitaries and sensitive situations, she maintained a steadfast privacy and confidentiality about her years working with three presidents of the United States. President Lyndon Johnson, in his book, The Vantage Point, wrote of Dwight Eisenhower's trust in Alice. Repeated requests for interviews by local Historians were always declined by Ms. Boyce. Alice will be dearly missed by her family and the many friends she encountered during her long and exciting career.
