Martin R. Santis ("Marty"), April 14, 1937 – June 16, 2017, of Acton, formerly of Concord.
He was the son of David Santis and Rose Rosenberg Santis Olem and was raised in the Brighton section of Boston and then in Brookline, MA.
Marty completed both his undergraduate studies and medical school at Tufts University, followed by 2 years as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, residency at the University of Michigan, and a 2-year Fellowship in Endocrinology at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and Joslin Clinic in Boston.
Marty spent 31 years in private medical practice, taking care of generations of families in Concord, MA and surrounding communities. As a testament to his relationships, he enjoyed gifts from the bounty of patients' gardens, kitchens, and woodworking shops.
He was a lifelong learner, with immense curiosity and an insatiable appetite for knowledge. He was a voracious reader, a devotee of the NY Times, and was known to start sentences with "I read somewhere…" to the great delight of his grandchildren. Marty returned to Tufts after retirement where he studied literature, philosophy, political science, and religion for 12 years. Marty also devoted some of his retirement to his cherished Concord Public Library, serving both as a library volunteer and on the local library board.
There's no doubt, he was a serious guy, but Marty also had a great sense of humor, which was often dry and always very intelligent. He was the king of the play on words.
He loved spending time with his family, whether over backyard burgers or on the many vacations and holidays he spent with his kids and grandkids. He was blessed that most of them lived just down the road so he was never too far away for a chat, some advice, or a laugh.
He will be remembered most for his kindness and caring, his intelligence and quick wit, and his love of friends and family. He was a sweet, sweet man.
Marty was married to Helen (Rosenzweig) for 56 years.
Marty is survived by his wife Helen, son David and his wife Kathi (McRoberts), daughter Susan and her husband Brett Neal, daughter Elizabeth, grandchildren Emily, Alexandra, Jessica, and Zachary, and his sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Lester Hahn.
His funeral will be held on Thursday, June 22nd at 1:00 pm at Kerem Shalom, 659 Elm Street, Concord, Massachusetts 01742 (978) 369-1223. Burial will follow in the Acacia section of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord.
