Obituary

Marie Rita (Scimemi) Dray, born in Boston, June 5, 1924, died suddenly on May 26, in Concord, MA, in her 96th year! Marie was the only daughter of Gaspare and Mariannina Scimemi (Angelo), who predeceased her. Marie lived a long and wonderful life, on her own and on her own terms, until her death. Her loving husband of 46 years, Walter Henry Dray, predeceased her, as did her twin brother Salvatore (Santina) Scimemi, her brother Peter (Phyllis) Scimemi and cousin raised as her brother, Peter Angelo. Marie graduated from Burdett College as an executive secretary. She worked at the War Finance Committee in Boston and many years later, because of this affiliation, she was asked to contribute names for the World War II memorial in Washington DC. She worked for John Hancock Life Insurance Co., Lever Brothers (now Unilever) and the US Dept. of Veterans' Affairs, where she met Walter Dray and worked as his secretary until their marriage in September, 1948. They lived in Boston's Back Bay while he studied at Boston University, then in Brighton until they bought their first home in Arlington, where they raised four children. Marie filled spare time with many hobbies: gardening, cooking (what an apple pie!), all needlecrafts, pen & ink drawing / oil painting, and gold leaf tray and furniture painting. She was an avid reader and occasionally, played bridge. After children where grown, Marie went back to work as the executive secretary to the Director, of the town of Arlington's Department of Planning and Community Development. When she retired, Marie and Walter built a home and moved to Osterville where Walter taught her how to play golf, which became her passion. They were members of Quashnet Valley Country Club in Mashpee, and, for several winters, they enjoyed a few months of sunshine and golf on Siesta Key, FL. After Walter's death, Marie took Italian lessons, read Dante's Inferno in the original Italian, and traveled to Rome and Tuscany to improve her language skills! In 2002, Marie moved to Concord to be closer to family, where she played golf at Butter Brook Golf Club and where she shot a hole-in-one at the age of 83! Marie leaves a brother, Enrico (Virginia) Scimemi (Medford, MA) and three daughters and one son: Marie Allison Dray (Amelia Island, FL), Jeanne Elizabeth (Donald) Duffy (Plantation, FL), Noreen Ann (Randy) Cochran (Leesburg, VA) and Walter Robert (Denise) Dray (Boston). Marie leaves eight grandchildren: Caitlin (Andrew) Olejack (Orlando, FL), Michael Duffy (Stephanie Hopkinson) (Austin, TX), Maura Duffy, DVM (Austin, TX), Devon Dray (Waltham, MA), McKenzie Dray (Brighton, MA), Dakota Dray (Los Angeles, CA), Lindsey Cochran (Arlington, VA) and Kyle Cochran (Leesburg, VA). Marie will be laid to rest with her husband Walter at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, after a Catholic mass and celebration of her life. Date and details to be determined. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
