Marianne Povell Mellnick died in Mass General Hospital on September 13 at the age of 69 after having been struck by lightning one week earlier.
Marianne was the daughter of the late Samuel and Marian Povell. She was born in New York City; grew up in Pittsfield, MA; and lived in Concord, MA for the past 41 years.
She leaves behind her sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Mario Dalo; sons Mark of Nashua, NH and Keith of Washington, DC; young granddaughters Sonya and Alexandra, nephews Michael Dalo of Santa Paula, CA and Christopher Dalo of Singapore; her niece Lynn Hall of Pinckney, MI; and far, far too many close friends to count.
Marianne received her bachelor's degree and Master's in Taxation from Bentley College. After many years in public finance with such companies as Sullivan Bille and KPMG, she worked in tax management, finishing her career as VP of Corporate Tax at Circor International before retiring in 2010.
Marianne's boundless energy and love of adrenaline led her to her great passion: skiing. She spent several months per year in Aspen, as well as ski resorts throughout North America and Europe. She also loved hiking, kayaking, bicycling, and dabbled in just about every active sport imaginable.
Beginning with an ocean liner adventure to spend three months in Europe when she was 17, Marianne fearlessly traveled the globe--to such locations as Pakistan, the Republic of Georgia, Tanzania, and Croatia, the birthplace of her beloved father. She recently went hiking on Mt. Rainier in Washington and had a trip planned to Cuba in November.
Family, friends, and her Catholic faith were the cornerstones of Marianne's life. She devoted some of her best years to raising her two boys and adored her granddaughters with childlike enthusiasm. Her vast circle of friends loved her dearly, but it was her sister who remained her closest confidante right up to the end.
Marianne shared her deep, selfless love also through support of the Pine Street Inn and Wounded Warrior Project. Her most recent volunteer work included time with Habitat for Humanity and Household Goods Recycling of Massachusetts (HGRM).
She will be irreplaceably missed, she will be lovingly remembered, and she will live on in the hearts of everyone who was blessed to have known her, as the heartwarming sound of her infectious laughter echoes on forever.
A public funeral Mass will be held in St. Michael's Church, 90 Concord Road, Bedford on Friday, September 19th at 10am, followed by a private family burial.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to be given to your charity of choice.
