Obituary

Margaret Cumming Waller, a long-time resident of Concord, MA, and formerly of Barrington, RI, died peacefully in her sleep at home on June 22, 2021. She was the widow of John B. Waller, and had recently celebrated her 100th birthday. Daughter of the late George and Myra Cumming, she was born in Pawtucket, RI where one of her earliest memories was the excitement of being carried out of the family home by firemen before it was destroyed by fire. Near the end of her life, she was again saved by the fire department, this time by Concord Emergency Medical Technicians, who knew her by name. She was grateful for their kind care and both appreciated and even enjoyed their speedy ambulance rides to the hospital. Margaret was a graduate of Colby Jr. College and Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. During World War II, she worked in the post office at the Boston Store in Pawtucket, which was managed by her father. In 1944, she married her husband, John, and they spent the end of the war in Newport, RI, where he was stationed in the Navy. They later moved to the Providence area and then to Barrington, RI to raise a family. Margaret was an administrative assistant for the Physics Department at Brown University, and later served in the same capacity at the Barrington Times newspaper. She was a volunteer for RI Hospice and an avid swimmer and golfer, who once shot a hole-in-one. After moving to Concord to live with her daughter Kristin, Margaret was a member and volunteer at Trinitarian Congregational Church, and a volunteer at Emerson Hospital. She is survived by two daughters, Kristin Waller of Concord and Jean Waller of Annapolis, MD and several nieces and nephews. At parties with family and friends, she was remembered belting out Sophie Tucker's red hot version of "Some of These Days." She also sang in the church choir in Barrington. A memorial service will be held at a later date. She will be laid to rest during a private burial service in Barrington, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice or Trinitarian Congregational Church, 54 Walden Street, Concord, MA 01742. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
