Margaret (Scully) McNally passed away peacefully at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham on February 14, 2021, at the age of 100 years after a long life well-lived. A longtime resident of Concord, Margaret was the beloved wife of the late Louis K. McNally Jr. who died in 1989 and to whom she was happily married for forty years.
Margaret was born in Cambridge on September 5, 1920 and was the daughter of the late James and Gertrude (Foley) Scully. Upon graduating from Girl's Latin School in Boston in 1938, she continued her education at Emmanuel College, graduating Cum Laude in 1942 and then on to earn a Masters in Teaching from Harvard Graduate School in 1943. Margaret was then accepted into the United States Naval Reserve Midshipman's School at Smith College, the training grounds for junior officers of the Women's Reserve of the U.S. Naval Reserve (WAVES) and received her commission as Ensign in August of 1943.
During WWII, Margaret was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant and served in the Office of Procurement in Cincinnati, before being transferred to Kentucky and Rhode Island as the Recruiting Officer in charge. Margaret's final assignment was in the Office of Naval Operations in Boston, serving as an Air Controller until 1946.
Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, Margaret accepted a position at Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill as Secretary to the Assistant Head of School, a role which soon led to the position of Assistant Head of School. Married in 1949, the McNally's moved to Concord and raised six children, gaining lifelong friends and becoming active and supportive members of the town and community they loved. Mrs. McNally also continued her professional pursuits and devotion to education in Concord, where she taught fifth grade at Thoreau School for twenty years until her retirement in 1986.
Margaret enjoyed being civically involved in Concord in many ways and was an Officer for the League of Women Voters and also served as Co-Chair of Invitations for the town's Bi-Centennial. A woman of profound and unwavering faith, Margaret was a longtime parishioner of St. Bernard's Church, and later, Holy Family Parish in Concord. An active member of the church, Margaret served as President of St. Bernard's Women's Sodality, as a member of the Inter-Church Peace Group, a member of The Parish Council and, as a Eucharistic Minister.
Margaret will be lovingly remembered by her children, Louis K. McNally III and his partner Vicki Swenor, James McNally and his wife Laura, Maura Ambrosino and her husband Salvatore, Jack McNally and his wife Cecelia, and Tricia McNally and her fiancé Paul Emerson, twelve grandchildren, six great-grandchildren as well as twenty-six nieces and nephews. Margaret was also the mother of the late Margaret McNally, and sister to the late Gertrude Duffey, James Scully, Patricia Scully, and Norma Underhill.
Family members will gather for a private Funeral Mass at Holy Family Parish, Concord, and burial at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Concord, where Officers of the United States Navy will present military honors.
The Town of Concord's town flag will fly at half-staff on Saturday, February 20, 2021 in honor of Margaret McNally's dedicated service to our country during World War II.
