Margaret "Sheila" Quinn Maffei, devoted mother, loving wife, and cherished friend, passed away from natural causes at the age of 87, on August 29th, with her family at her side in Fort Myers, FL. Sheila's family takes comfort in knowing she enjoyed a rich life with her family and countless friends from her years in the northeast and Florida.
Sheila was born to Henry Thomas Quinn and Catherine Dunphy in Greenwich, CT. The youngest of three children, she attended Greenwich Academy and then studied Art at Rosemont College in Pennsylvania. In 1958, she married Ralph Maffei, with whom she had four children—Greg, Margot, Anne, John—and eventually ten grandchildren. Earlier this year, Ralph passed from Covid-19.
Sheila had an active and fulfilling life. A loving and dedicated mother, her themed birthday parties for her children were creative and memorable. When one of her family members was diagnosed with dyslexia, she studied the condition and became a specialized tutor at several schools. In New York City, she was a designer for store windows and a museum tour guide. Later, Sheila worked as a real estate agent with Century 21 and the Barrett Company in Concord, MA. Sheila's passions for art and real estate came in handy when she and Ralph built a vacation home in Sanibel, FL, which became a holiday destination for family and friends. Ralph and she enjoyed traveling around the country and the world. Later in life, they settled in a retirement community in Fort Myers, near her beloved Sanibel.
Sheila will be remembered for her generosity, patience, tact, and wisdom. She loved nature, from her years with the Concord Gardening Club to shelling and participating in the Osprey count on Sanibel Island. Well-read and conversant with culture and the latest literature, she belonged to book clubs in Massachusetts and Florida, and enjoyed the Sun Valley Writers' Conference in Idaho. Sheila was fun; not only witty, but an accomplished cook and gracious host who made everyone feel welcome. She was famous for her get-togethers, such as large Thanksgiving celebrations that included much of the neighborhood playing soccer before dinner.
The warmth and strength of Sheila's character can be measured by the vast number of people who considered her a dear friend. We have lost a great member of our community, but can take solace in knowing Sheila and Ralph are now together again.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a Funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, 12 Monument Square, Concord Center on Saturday, October 16th at 11 am. Services will conclude with interment at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and a reception.
