Margaret "Rita" (Mazzarella) Barbacano, 96, of St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham, formerly of Concord, Lexington and Somerville died Thursday January 7, 2016 in Framingham. She was the beloved wife of 25 years of the late Guy A. Barbacano.
Born in Caserta, Italy on October 4, 1919 she was the youngest of four children of Domenico and Maria (Argenzio) Mazzarella. She attended schools in Caserta and later taught in elementary schools in Italy for several years.
She met her future husband Guy while he was stationed in Italy with the Fifth Army during World War II. The couple was married in Italy and she came to the United States in 1946 with her infant daughter, aboard the Victory Ship Thomas Barry, landing in Staten Island, New York.
The family resided in Somerville until 1956 when they moved into their new family home in Lexington, which Mr. Barbacano built.
Mrs. Barbacano's faith, her family and her homemaking, especially her cooking were paramount in her life.
She very much enjoyed the 18 trips she made back to Italy to visit with family and friends.
A long time communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Lexington, she became a resident of Concord in 2007 and became a communicant of Holy Family Parish.
She was a member of Concord Senior Citizens and was an active participant in the activities of the Concord Council on Aging. She also enjoyed playing Bingo in Waltham and later in Concord.
She was the cherished mother of Mary Ann Peachey and her husband John of Littleton, Lucille Horgan and her husband James of Acton, Guy A. Barbacano Jr.and his partner Anita Wolf of Arlington, and Mark A. Barbacano and his wife Linda of Bedford, grandmother of John J. Peachey and his wife Heather, Laura Mello and her husband Robert, Shawna Horgan, Kerri Horgan and her spouse Tiffany, Adam Barbacano and his fiancée Danielle Adams, Angela Fenton and her husband Neil, and Michael Barbacano and his wife Kristina and great grandmother of Charles and Michael Peachey, Matthew and Elena Mello, Charlotte Fenton, and Emma Horgan. She was also the sister of the late Luke and Guy Mazzarella and Madelena Papa.
Visitation will be held Tuesday January 12th from 9 to 9:45 am at the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 am in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center.
Interment will follow in the family burial plot in Westview Cemetery, Lexington.
