Marcella O'Brien Bohn was born in Chicago in 1941 to Thomas J. and Phyllis O'Brien, (née Finnegan). Marcy was raised in Wilmette and Evanston, Illinois, with her brother Timothy and sister Luli, attending St. Francis Xavier and then Marywood High School. Although she resided in Massachusetts for the last four decades, Marcy always identified as a Chicagoan. She appreciated the beauty of Lake Michigan (friends recall driving around the lake in her orange Cadillac convertible); cherished her childhood friends and babysitter, Bertha; and loved working in her parents' flower shop. As a teenager, Marcy was voted "most likely to become a nun," but was also known for playing tricks on the priests at the rectory with her friends. Marcy met her former husband, Robert H. Bohn Jr., at a dance while attending Rosemont College in Rosemont, Pennsylvania. After marrying, the couple moved to Washington, D.C., where she graduated from Catholic University's School of Social Work. Their time in Washington was marked by the joy of the birth of their son, Robert Timothy (Tim). It was also a period during which Marcy and Bob were greatly impacted by and sympathetic to the civil rights efforts following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Marcy and Bob later moved to Wichita, Kansas, where their beloved daughter Catherine was born. The couple later moved to Massachusetts, where Marcy resided for the remainder of her years. Marcy holds the distinction of being the first student to enroll at the Boston Institute for Psychotherapy, where she completed her post-graduate training. She later became a teacher and supervisor there and practiced as a psychoanalytically informed psychotherapist for many years. Marcy was a skilled and natural clinician, deeply respected and appreciated by patients and colleagues who describe her as "a wonderful person and therapist" and "an incredible teacher and guide who went beyond the call of duty in all of those roles." One of the roles that Marcy most cherished was that of grandmother to Callum and Luke Bohn (sons of Tim and wife Alicia) and Tony and Alexander Whelan (sons of Catherine and husband David). Marcy demonstrated a steadfast affection for the boys, always appreciating their unique personalities and gifts, supporting their particular interests, and bestowing upon them her unwavering love, even as she battled a painful illness. Marcy possessed a boundless curiosity and filled her life with art, music, dancing, swimming, literature, writing, and teaching. It was impossible to know Marcy and not be moved by her deep soul and her capacity for compassion and generosity. She enjoyed fulfilling friendships that grew out of her gift for listening intently and with an open heart. As one friend recalled, "There was nothing we couldn't talk about or tell each other; it was rare and precious." Those who loved Marcy will remember her intelligence, humor, empathy, loyalty, introspection, thoughtfulness, irreverence, humility and strength of character. She was, as a friend aptly put it, "a gute neshuma—a profoundly good soul, tenderhearted and kind."
