Malcolm Laughlin, age 86, a resident of Newbury Court in Concord, MA, formerly of Belmont, MA, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on June 16, 2024. He was married to Frances-Lee (Sprague) Laughlin for 60 years, and was the father of three beloved daughters, Susan, Catherine and Anne, and grandfather of six beloved grandchildren.
Malcolm was born in Bronxville, NY on December 9, 1937, the son of the late E. Budd and Evelyn (Wilson) Laughlin. He was brought up in Scarsdale NY and received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Industrial Management from M.I.T.
As a resident of Belmont, MA for 20 years, Malcolm was a town meeting member and contributed to the Belmont Historical Society.
Malcolm's lifelong passion was for trains; he had an encyclopedic knowledge of railroads. After working for the New York Central Railroad, he became a transportation consultant, optimizing freight service for railroads across the U.S. and in Egypt, Jordan and Finland.
Malcolm also worked for IBES (Institutional Brokers' Estimate System), developed his own backtesting system, and in his later years, became a medical coder for Boston Medical Center, a job he enjoyed into his 80's.
Over the course of many years, Malcolm was an member of M.I.T's Tech Model Railroad Club, the North Shore Model Railroad Club and in his later years a member of TCA (Train Collectors Association) and the NYCSHS (New York Central System Historical Society), where at the time of his death, he was working on tracing the evolution of the New York Central System.
Malcolm's hobbies included model railroading and, in retirement, carefully restoring pre-war toy trains. He enjoyed working and traveling in Europe and the Middle East and particularly enjoyed his visit to China in the 1970's with a group of railroad professionals.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to either Save The Children/Ukraine or Doctors Without Borders .
Arrangements are entrusted to Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
