Obituary

Major M. White, a retired mechanical design engineer, and a forty year resident of Concord, MA, died after a long illness on June 28, 2023 at Benchmark Senior Living Memory Care at Robbins Brook in Acton, MA. He was 82.

Major was born in Sparta, Georgia on December 5, 1940, to Eva and L.T. White. He was the second born of six sons and four daughters. His birth was attended by the local midwife Mary Lott. After his family migrated by train from Sparta, Georgia to Trenton, NJ during WWII, Major attended Trenton public schools including Junior High School #1 and Trenton Central High School where he graduated in 1959. He then attended Howard University, School of Engineering, Washington, DC, from 1959-1963. He graduated with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, in 1963.

Major was a devoted father and an avid golfer throughout his adult life. He was a member of the Howard University varsity golf team. After college, he played in golf leagues in NJ and MA. He was a member of the Inner Club at Green Meadow Golf Course, Hudson, NH for several decades.

After college, Major worked for Curtiss Wright Aeronautical Company, Paterson, NJ as a mechanical design engineer. He moved to the Boston, MA area where he worked in the defense industry at Itek Optics Company, Lexington, MA. He designed medical devices for Hewlett Packard Company, Waltham for several years, then moved to Polaroid Corporation, Cambridge, designing optical projects for nearly a decade. Several other companies included AT&T Bell Labs, Andover, DEC, Marlboro, Drager Medical, Methuen, and Teradyne Company. Major completed over fifty years of mechanical engineering design and product development consulting when he finally retired in 2015. After retirement he enjoyed traveling to visit family in NJ and playing golf. He was also a head usher at First Parish in Concord for many years. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Major is survived by his wife Holli Jones-White; his son, Mark M. White of Concord, MA; his sisters Alice M. Jefferson and Lynette (Cookie) White; his brother Sammy White; his brother-in-law Joseph Marrow; his sisters-in-law Paulette Washington White and Sharon White, all of New Jersey. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews including Andrea Marrow Chapman and her husband Kevin Chapman, Michele Mendenhall, Samantha Mendenhall, Jakeelah White, Chazz Sumners, Monique MacRae, Ivette White, Roland (Mo) White, Elaine White, Donna White and David White. He is also survived by his cousin, Gene M. White, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Major was predeceased by his parents, Eva Chatman White and L. Thomas White; his sisters Carolyn E. Marrow and Catherine W. Sumners; and his brothers Bobby, Ernest, Larry, and Ronald White.

A memorial service is being planned for this fall at First Parish in Concord, MA. The date and time will be announced soon. The family plans to have a private interment at Ewing Cemetery in Ewing, NJ.
