Obituary

Madeline E. (Stephen) Ohs-Sloan, of Carlisle and a summer resident of Duxbury, died peacefully, following a brief illness, on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at Emerson Hospital in Concord. She recently celebrated her 90th birthday and was the cherished wife of James F. Sloan. Madeline was born on June 15, 1928, as the daughter of the late Edward and Madeline (Hankinson) Stephen. A nearly lifelong resident of Carlisle, she moved to town at a very young age and graduated from Concord High School. She continued her studies at Mount Ida College in Newton, before getting married and starting her family. She was an Owner of Edward R. Stephen Plumbing & Heating Company, and was affiliated with the Billerica based business for 58 years. Madeline had a profound love for nature, animals, and the outdoors in general. She cross-country skied well into her seventies, enjoyed relaxing by her swimming pool, and tended to the beautiful flowers in her garden. She was particularly fond of birds, and often painted and maintained the birdhouses that grace her property. In addition to her loving husband Jim, Madeline is survived by three children, Robin Dunn and her husband Steve of Richmond, NH, Gail Schlegelmilch and her husband Harry of Leominster, and Barry Ohs and his wife Marcy of Carlisle, her grandchildren, Andy Dunn, Spencer and Adam Schlegelmilch, and Leah Shanahan, three great grandchildren, Alex, Cody, and Jack, a sister, Harriet Decatur of Burlington, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Harry G. Ohs. Family and friends will gather for a visiting hour in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center, on Sunday, July 1st from 12 to 1 pm, followed by a procession to Green Cemetery, Bedford Road, Carlisle, where her graveside service will be held at 1:30 pm.
