Obituary

M. Frederick (Fred) Johnson, 85, of Newbury Court in Concord, MA, died peacefully at Rivercrest Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Concord on Monday, July 15, 2019. He previously resided in Ridgway, PA, Lower Burrell, PA, Mount Pleasant, PA and Shrewsbury, MA. For 61 years, Fred was the devoted and loving husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Richardson Johnson. Born in Ridgway, PA on August 27, 1933, he was the son of the late Mearl and Anne (Weissenfluh) Johnson. After graduating from Ridgway High School, Fred enlisted in the Army and served in Korea. After his discharge, he returned home to Ridgway and married Betty on December 14, 1957. They raised three children, Diane, Carole and David.​ ​He attended Penn State University and earned an Associate's degree in Electrical Engineering. Fred had a long and successful career with West Penn Power Company, where he worked for over 30 years, retiring as a Division Manager. After retirement, Fred and Betty moved from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Fred was active in his community and church. He was very involved with Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs, and volunteered with the Lutheran church. Fred was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and enjoyed spending time with his wife, his children and his grandchildren. He was a constant source of love and support for his family. He was an extremely kind man, and also had a great sense of humor. He was well loved by not only his extended family, but also by friends, co-workers, caregivers, and many others. In addition to his wife Betty, he leaves behind a daughter Diane Exter and her husband Neil of Lexington, MA, a daughter Carole Park and her husband Andrew of Framingham, MA, a son David Johnson and his wife Janet of Medfield, MA and seven grandchildren: Michael and Jared Exter, Kristin, Katy and Drew Park, and Peter and Elise Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice Pennington, Janice Wickwire and Eleanor Johnson. Family and friends are invited to gather for a period of visitation in the Duvall Chapel at Newbury Court, 80 Deaconess Road, Concord on Sunday, July 21st from 2 to 3 pm, with a funeral service beginning at 3 pm. Burial will follow at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, where Officers of the United States Army will recognize his honorable service by presenting military honors. Concord's Town Flag will fly at half-staff on Sunday, July 21st in recognition of Mr. Johnson's faithful military service to our country. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284 (​www.dana-farber.org​). Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
