Lydia (Cobb) Perkins, 92, of Concord, formerly of Dedham, MA, died on April 2. She was wife of 67 years to John A. Perkins of Concord. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 22, 1920, she grew up on a working farm in Littleton, Mass, attended Concord Academy before going to boarding school at Chatham Hall where she made life-long friends. She attended Sarah Lawrence College and graduated from the Boston School of Occupational Therapy (now Tufts). In her early adult years she practiced occupational therapy, first in Massachusetts and then in Washington, DC with injured soldiers during World War II. She and her husband, John, settled in Dedham, Massachusetts where she made a lively home with four children. She engaged in a variety of volunteer work in the community but the effort she poured her life and spirit into was the organization of support for a school library at the Ellis Mendell Elementary School in Roxbury. Her dining room table was regularly covered with children's books and she went weekly to work with the elementary school children whose excitement about learning would replenish her soul. Her summer life on North Haven Island on the coast of Maine was a deep and enduring part of her life with family, friends, and the natural surroundings. Always dedicated to a life with the sea, she and her husband spent many joyful nights cruising in boats. They had remarkable adventures on a daysailer before they acquired their beloved Medric. She is known for her family picnics that would start early, include a cooking lunch, and not end until the wind had died and the sun was on (or over) the horizon. If the sea were part of the picture, she was game for adventure. She connected with her Rotch family roots in New Bedford and their seafaring history. Her exposure to farm life as a child continued to find expression through her interest in gardening throughout her life. Her engaging personality and concern for others resulted in diverse friendships. She will be especially remembered for her willing laughter. She is survived by her husband, John, and four children; John A. Jr. and his wife Nancy of Tiverton, RI; Susan W. Graseck and her husband Paul of Pawtucket, RI; Robert C. and his wife Kate of Camden, ME; and William B. and his wife Maura of Concord. She is also survived by a sister, Emily M. Cobb of Littleton; a brother, Robert C. Cobb, Jr. of Westwood; and ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and her beloved granddog, Beau. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, April 14 at the Trinitarian Congregational Church, located at 54 Walden Street in Concord, Massachusetts.
