IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Linda Huntington
Pettengill
March 2, 1931 – November 10, 2023
Linda Huntington Pettengill, 92, passed away peacefully with family by her side, on November 10, 2023, at The Commons in Lincoln, Massachusetts.
Born on March 2, 1931, to Virginia Smith Huntington and Theodore Lee Huntington, Linda was raised with her two older brothers Teddy and Franz, along with lifelong friends Molly, Betty, and Barbara, in Bexley, Ohio. She graduated from the Columbus School for Girls in 1949 and Smith College in 1953.
After graduation Linda moved to Boston where she worked for the Curtis Publishing Company. While living in Boston she met the one and only love of her life, Daniel Abbott Pettengill. They were married in 1955 and immediately moved to St. Louis, Missouri while Dan earned his masters degree at Washington University. Dan's career in hospital administration led them to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where son Daniel was born, Marblehead, Massachusetts where Nancy was born, and then to Indian Hill, Ohio where Sarah joined the family. Another move took them to Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania for the next 17 years. Upon retirement, Linda and Dan divided their time between Naples, Florida and their cherished family home in Harwich Port, Massachusetts, eventually living year-round on Cape Cod.
Some of Linda's favorite childhood memories were at her father's ranch in Estes Park, Colorado where she fed chipmunks by hand and rode her horse, Chief. As an adult, her love of the outdoors turned to gardening, creating beautiful landscapes wherever the family lived. She adored their many dogs, and, when she could no longer have her own, she lovingly embraced her grand dogs, sometimes having as many as seven running around during family gatherings.
An avid knitter, Linda made many sweaters and blankets. She also created beautiful needlepoint gifts, some of which are still treasured by family members today. She was an active member of the Pittsburgh Garden Club and the Junior league.
Linda was warm, unfailingly gracious, and witty. She valued proper etiquette, something she instilled in her children and grandchildren. Classically elegant, she was always impeccably dressed with well-styled hair and a touch of lipstick.
Predeceased by her parents, brothers, and husband, Linda leaves her dearly-loved children Daniel Pettengill (Sue) of Sudbury, Massachusetts, Nancy Bushnell (Rick), of Norwell, Massachusetts; and Sarah Hart (David) of Carlisle, Massachusetts; grandchildren Rachel Merrell (Greg), William Pettengill (Julia), Andrew Bushnell, Stephen Bushnell (Regina), Katherine Hart, Campbell Hart, and Peter Hart; and great grandchildren Josephine, Pierce, Henry, and Caroline.
Burial will take place at the National Cemetery in Bourne, Massachusetts following a private service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cape Cod Hospital via the Cape Cod Healthcare Foundation .
Arrangements are entrusted to Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
