Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Ligita Stukuls (Lucs) of Concord, MA, announces her death on November 22, 2018 at the age of 74 years. She will be remembered as a loving wife, a devoted mother of two sons, a proud grandmother of twin grandchildren, a cherished daughter and sister, and a warm and generous friend to many. Ligita is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, Voldemars, her son Derek and his wife Rita MacDonald of Olivebridge, NY, her son Gregory and his wife Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls and their children Gunnar and Ligaya of Oakland, CA, and by many nieces and nephews, extended family members and dear friends. In 2013, Ligita was preceded in death by her twin sister, Anita Courtemanche of Rocky Hill, CT and by her mother Stasia Lucs of Willimantic CT. Ligita was born in Riga, Latvia on December 25, 1943 to Stasia and Leonhards Lucs. Escaping the advancing armies of WWII, her mother and grandmother fled with Ligita and her twin sister to Germany in 1944 where they lived for the next 5 1/2 years in displaced persons camps in Stutggart and Eslingen. In 1950, the family sailed for New York Harbor aboard the USS General Hersey, traveling on to make a new home in Willimantic, CT. After college, Ligita moved to San Francisco where she married Voldemars Stukuls in 1965. Their life together led them from San Francisco to Phoenix then on to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where they welcomed their two sons, Derek and Greg. Life further led them on to New Fairfield, CT and Cincinnati, OH, then finally on to Concord, MA where the family settled nearly 35 years ago. Ligita graduated from the University of Hartford and also attended Western Connecticut State College where she graduated with a degree in teaching. She worked for many years as a teacher and later became the assistant to Lewis Cantley, the Director of Cancer Research at Harvard / Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Ligita celebrated her retirement in late 2012 after 20 years at the Cantly Lab. Relatives and friends are invited to gather in the Farrar Chapel of the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord, MA for visiting hours on Friday, December 28th from 2-5 pm with a memorial service celebrating Ligita's life from 3-4 pm.
