Lewis Lorenzo Bates Gifford , died September 19, 2011. Born in Somerville, Massachusetts, May 3rd, 1930, Lewis was the oldest of five children born to Lewis L. B. and Rose (Westlin) Gifford. Lew spent his childhood growing up on Central Street, and attended Somerville High School. He graduated in 1947 and maintained close friendships with many of his classmates throughout the decades. Lewis entered Harvard University and worked his way through to a degree in Fine Arts in 1951. He was a member of the Harvard Lampoon, and proudly served as the coxswain for the Harvard Lampoon's rowing team. Lewis met and fell in love with Rebecca Dare Bacon when he was employed as a night watchman at Jordan Marsh in Boston in 1952. Becky was an assistant buyer for Jordan Marsh, and they were introduced by his mother, Rose, a bookkeeper at the store. They would see each other as he started his shift and she ended her day. They married in 1953, moved to New York City, and began their family. Daniel arrived in 1957 and Alexandra followed in 1960. Lew began a career in advertising with J. Walter Thompson of New York City. In 1961, however, Lew partnered with Paul Kim and formed Paul Kim and Lew Gifford Productions. He drew and animated the original Trix Rabbit. It was during this time that Lew was involved in the School House Rock series, notably the History Rock and Science Rock cartoons. He also won an Emmy Award for his work on the children's show, Drawing Power. In the early eighties, Lewie and Becky moved to Cape Cod, and enjoyed semi-retirement until Becky's untimely death in 1989. In November of 1992 Lewis met his next great love, Jean Murphy. After a whirlwind romance, they married in May of 1993 and spent eighteen wonderful years together, living in Acton, Massachusetts. The couple traveled to Bermuda and Europe, took cruises together and spent wonderful summers on Cape Cod overlooking Pleasant Bay. Lew was truly embraced by Jean's family and well loved by all. Lewis leaves behind a large and loving family. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean, his sisters, Helen Keating, Claire Griffiths, and Carole Hellyer. His brother Donald Gifford predeceased him. He is also survived by his son, Dan Gifford; his daughter, Alexandra Gifford Ward, his daughter-in-law, Carol Gifford, and his son-in- law, Jeffrey Ward.
