McGrath, Leo J. Jr. in Concord on March 20th at age 84. Member of a long time Concord family. Beloved husband of 38 years of the late Elizabeth D. "Betty"(Lynah) McGrath. Father of Matthew A. and his wife Catherine of Concord, and Owen G. and his wife Ruby of Newark, CA. Grandfather of Courtney A. Cronkhite and her husband, Justin, of Milford, NH, Sheryl R. LMcGrath of Woonsocket, RI, Leo J., Helen E., Thomas E., and Joseph P. McGrath, all of Newark, CA. Great-grandfather of Abram Cronkhite of Milford, NH. Brother of the late John J., Paul T. and Mark J. McGrath. Companion of Ann McCorkle of W. Yarmouth, MA.
Born on August 13, 1932, in Medford, MA, Leo was the son of Leo J. McGrath and Helen E. (Morrissey) McGrath. He grew up in Concord, and was a 1950 graduate of Concord High School where he excelled as a guard on the undefeated 1949 football team. He earned a scholarship to Harvard University as a member of the Class of 1954. He later earned a graduate degree from Northeastern University. Enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1952, he served as a Radio operator with the 328th Comm Recon Co., 312th Comm Recon Bn. in Germany and Austria. For his service he was awarded the Army Good Conduct medal, The Army Occupation Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. From the late 1950's until the early 1970's, he worked for the Harvard Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's satellite tracking program. After leaving Smithsonian in the early 1970's, Leo began a career with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Dept. of Employment and Training from which he retired in 1999 as a Senior Analyst in charge of Federal Systems In 1963, Leo and Betty settled into a home in Concord center where they raised their two sons. He was a skilled photographer, talented gardener, and a crossword puzzle enthusiast. A devoted family man, he could always be relied upon for support by friends and neighbors. A long-time fan of the Boston Celtics, he was at the Boston Garden when "Havlicek stole the ball". A communicant at the St. Benedict Center, in Still River, Leo passed away peacefully, fortified by the rites of the Roman Catholic Church. As a family we could not have asked for a better man as our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and father-in-law.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford St. Concord, MA
Funeral on Thursday March 30, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, 282 Still River Rd., Still River, MA. followed by interment at St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord.
