Lauren Colby Kingman, Jr. a longtime resident of Croton-on-Hudson, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 6, 2010. He was 92 years of age.
Born in Concord, MA, on September 18,1917, to Lauren Colby, Sr. and Zara Schnair Kingman, he graduated from Concord High School in 1935. He earned a bachelors degree with honors from Harvard College in 1939. He rowed on Harvard crews from 1936 to 1939 and was a member of the Harvard Varsity Club.
In September, 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet and was commissioned a second lieutenant July 1,1942. After training in aerial photo interpretation and combat intelligence he joined VI Corps at Anzio and remained with it through the invasion of Southern France, into Germany, and occupation duty in Austria. Awards received were seven campaign stars, an invasions arrowhead, a Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster and a Bronze Star Medal. He left active service as a captain and continued in the army reserve, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel after a total of 28 years of service.
On October 21, 1943, he married Julia E. Bellinger at the West Concord Union Church, in Concord, MA. A week later he departed for overseas. In 1947, he and Julia moved to Croton, where they raised their four children.
He worked for Collett Week Corporation for 14 years and for the Mearl Corporation for 30 years, both in Ossining, NY, and both involved in processing natural products. Professional society memberships included American Chemical Society, American Oil Chemists Society and the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. He was a member of Corinthian Lodge of Masons, Concord, MA. He attended Our Saviour Lutheran Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and choir member. He was active in Scouting, serving as troop committee member and chairman.
He is survived by two sons Lauren C. Kingman III and Mary Ann Hoffman of Milan, NY, and Allen and his wife Ellyn Kingman of Hamilton, NH; two daughters, Karolyn Kingman of Croton-on-Hudson, NY and Julie Kingman of Concord, MA; four grandchildren, Autumn Berg and Douglas, Allyson, and Rebecca Kingman and one great-grandson, Griffin Berg.
On February 20, 2007, his wife Julia passed away after 63 years of marriage.
A memorial service and celebration ofhis life was held on January 16th at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Croton.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 30th at 12 noon in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord for both Lauren C. Kingman, Jr. who died on January 6, 2010 and Julia Kingman. Officiating will be Rev. Lilian Warner of Concord and members of the Corinthian Lodge A.F. and A.M. of Concord will conduct a Masonic service. Officers of the U.S. Army will present military honors.
Concord's town flag will fly at half staff in recognition of Mr. Kingman's service to his country.
