Kathryn Apgar passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 25th at the Rivercrest Wellness Center affiliated with the Newbury Court retirement community in Concord. She was 91.
Kay, as she was known to friends and family, was born in 1925 in Lattimer Mines Pennsylvania. As a young woman, Kay was very motivated to explore her full potential and was interested in education and expanding her horizons. She was very much ahead of her time and was the first in her family to attend college. She worked her way through Douglass Women's College in New Jersey with a job at John's Manville where she met her future husband Ed. Kay went on to get her Master's Degree in Psychiatric Social Work at Rutgers University and had a more than 30-year career as a practicing therapist and social worker at Family Service Association of Boston.
Ed and Kay were married in 1950 and had two sons, Brian and Martin who both attended Lexington High School and have gone on to careers in computer science and biotechnology. Kay and Ed lived on School Street in Lexington for more than 40 years and were active in the Follen Community Church and regularly attended Unitarian Church summer conferences on Star Island off of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Ed passed away in March of 2014.
Kay is survived by her sons, Martin and Brian and her sister Louise. Kay will be remembered by her family for her love and generous caring spirit. She touched our lives in her gentle loving way, giving us a profound and wonderful gift that we will carry with us the rest of our lives.
