Karle Sanborn Packard Jr. , 94, of Concord, MA died Thursday October 8, 2015 in Concord. He was the husband of fifty years of the late Agnes "Sally" Katherine (Dewey) Packard, who died in 1993.
Born in Dorchester, MA on July 15, 1921 he was the son of the late Karle Sanborn Packard Sr. and Dorothea Marguerite (Dinsmoor) Packard. After his family moved to New York, he attended schools there and was the Valedictorian of the Class of 1939 at Mineola High School. He later graduated from Columbia College in 1943.
During World War II he worked for the United States Department of War Research , specializing in magnetic airborne detection of submarines.
After the War, he went to work as a physicist at Airborne Instruments Laboratory on Long island. There he worked on microwave waveguides and guidance systems.
He was elected a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers in 1986 for contributions to swept frequency impedance measurement and microwave strip transmission line theory and technology.
He earned a Masters degree in Physics from New York University.
An avid sailor, he taught navigation and seamanship at the US Power Squadron and was Commodore of the Lloyd Harbor Yacht Club.
In his later years he took an active interest in genealogy and was president of the Packard and Allied Families Association.
Mr. Packard was the father of Karle Sanborn Packard III of Concord, MA, grandfather of Douglas Rubin Packard and Juliet Dorothea Packard and brother of the late Alan D. Packard.
Visiting hours will be held Sunday October 11th at the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord, MA from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm.
A graveside service will be held Monday October 12th at 11 am at Hanover Center Cemetery, Silver Street, Hanover, MA.
