Obituary

Juzefa Šukyte Vizgirda passed away peacefully on April 29, 2016, at the age of 92. She was a New Year's baby, born on the family farm in Slavikai, Lithuania, and raised there with her seven siblings. World War II forced the family to flee their home and, after about a year, find shelter in a refugee camp in Germany. In 1948, Juzefa and her sister Agota, agreed to work contracts as maids, allowing them to immigrate to Winnipeg, Canada, and be the first in their family to start new lives in a new world. After a year, they moved to Montreal, soon to be joined by other family members. In Montreal, she married Jonas Vizgirda and had a daughter, Joana. In the 1960's, the family immigrated to the U.S., soon settling in Chicago. Juzefa was always employed, often working the late shift, allowing her to raise her family and contribute to its' income. After Jonas retired, he and Juzefa moved to Seminole, FL, where they enjoyed several decades of well-earned leisure with dear friends, neighbors, and visiting family. With Jonas' declining health and death in 2004, Juzefa came to the Concord, MA home of her daughter and son-in-law. Having survived through bombs and bullets, Soviet and Nazi occupations, refugee camps, and the immigrant experience, Juzefa liked to be described as a "tough cookie". But she was also a nurturing soul, always ready to lend a hand or an ear, and enjoyed nothing more than cooking her Lithuanian specialties for family and friends. Juzefa leaves, in deep bereavement, her daughter Joana Vizgirda, son-in –law Stein Jacobsen, sisters Agota Gustainis and Petre Spear, brother Jonas Šukys, many nieces, nephews, and their families, extended and "adopted" family members, and many dear friends. A funeral service was held in Resurrection Parish, Toronto, followed by burial at St. John's Lithuanian Cemetery, Mississauga, Ontario. Contributions in Juzefa's memory may be made to the Sophia Sukys Walsh Memorial Endowment Fund for Ovarian Cancer Research, Loyola Univ. Medical Center, Office of Development, 2160 S. First Ave., Maywood, Illinois 60153
