Julian Bigelow Hines, age 65, of Lexington, died Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at his home. He was beloved partner of the late Cynthia Jeanne Baron,
He was the loving son of the late Marion Ernest Hines and Julie (Viele) Hines, and loving brother of Sheldon Knickerbocker Hines and his wife Virginia Bradley Hines of Concord and Hadley Warren Hines and her husband Edward Victor Chianese of Belmont. He was the devoted uncle of Sarah Thompson Hines and her partner, Jorge Edgar Camacho of Northampton and Cochabamba Bolivia, Atulananda Dasa (Andrew Matchett) Hines of Los Angeles, Anna Viele Hines and her partner Gregory Michael Kops, of Ithaca, NY, Noe Edward Hines Chianese of Belmont and Emma Ruth Knickerbocker Chianese of Belmont and great uncle to Ananda Bradley Schaff of Ithaca, NY and Maia Wara Camacho Hines and Nina Aysel Camacho Hines of Northampton.
Julian grew up in Summit NJ and Weston MA. He graduated from the Middlesex School in Concord and attended the University of Pennsylvania. A natural athlete, he competed in crew at Middlesex and Penn, and in a Youth Regatta in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1968. As a member of the original Earthday Committee of Philadelphia, he helped organize one of the first Earth Day events in the US in 1970. A visionary in solar energy, in 1978 he designed and built parabolic trough solar collectors that were demonstrated to Senator Edward Kennedy on the Boston Common, displayed at the Christian A. Herter Center, and installed on the roof of mayoral candidate Mel King.
A taxi driver in Philadelphia and Boston for many years, he also served as the computer guru of the Center Club of Boston (part of Bay Cove Human Services), developing software and teaching members to use personal computers.
A memorial gathering will be held in the fall of 2016.
