Obituary

Our beloved Judith "Judy" Elsa Flemming Gale of Concord succumbed to metastatic ovarian cancer on Friday. She was 78 years old. Judy was born to Ricardo and Blanca Flemming on Oct. 16, 1939, in Ecuador. As a young adult, Judy immigrated to the U.S., where she married the love of her life, Lawrence "Larry" Gale on Sept. 26, 1964, in Brooklyn, N.Y. They were happily married for 42 years until Larry's passing on Dec. 11, 2006. Judy graduated from Rutgers University with a master's degree in education and with a dual Ph.D. in philosophy and literature in 1982. Judy worked as a full-time tenured assistant professor for Pace University in New York City until her retirement in 2008. Judy enjoyed working with her students and colleagues at Pace and loved teaching. She also enjoyed reading, writing her book, traveling, gardening, taking care of the family dogs and most importantly spending time with her beloved grandchildren. Judy is preceded in death by her parents, mother-in-law Ines Gale, husband Larry, sister Betty Flemming Monroy and nephew Bryan Flemming. Judy is survived by daughters Adriana Cohen and Silvana Gale-Driscoll; sons-in-law Benjamin Cohen and Stephen Driscoll; her siblings Eugenia Flemming, Piedad Michelassi, Walter Flemming, Michael Flemming; and her four grandchildren, Jeffrey Cohen, Steven Cohen, Brittany Cohen and Erik Driscoll, whom she loved dearly. Judy also had many nieces and nephews that she cared for as well including Betty Monroy and Dominique Monroy Valadez. The family of Judith "Judy" Gale wishes to extend our sincere thanks to all the nurses, doctors and aides who cared for her at Emerson Hospital, Dana-Farber, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Benchmark Senior Living at Robbins Brook and the Kaplan House in Danvers. Following cremation, a memorial service will be held on Friday, August 24th, at 11 am in the Farrar Chapel of the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society at www.humanesociety.org or Dana-Farber Cancer Research at www.dana-farber.org. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
