Joseph A. Ziehler, 86, longtime resident of Carlisle, died Friday, August 6, 2010 at Wayside Hospice in Wayland. He was the beloved husband of the late Marcia (Sullivan) Ziehler who died in 2006.
Born in Newburyport on December 27, 1923 he was the son of the late Joseph and Bissie (Godard) Ziehler. He graduated from the University of Hartford with a Bachelor degree in Education and a Masters degree in Education.
During World War II, he served as a Private First Class in the United States Army and was stationed in Italy.
For many years, prior to his retirement, Mr. Ziehler was a fifth grade history teacher at the Lexington public schools.
A 40 year resident of Carlisle, he was an avid golfer, voracious reader, loved to swim and an amateur photographer. He enjoyed watching sports especially the Patriots and the Red Sox.
Survivors include 2 sons, David and his wife Pamela and Joseph Ziehler Jr., all of Carlisle, two special granddaughters, Valerie and Eleonora, 3 brothers, Allen Ziehler of East Haven, Connecticut, James Ziehler of Sanborn, Maine and Harry Ziehler of Hillsboro, Oregon. He was also the brother of the late Kay.
Visitation:
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, August 11th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center.
Service:
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, August 12th at 10 AM in Green Cemetery, Carlisle. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Diane Miller of The First Religious Society in Carlisle.
